e IhM Playoff Edge, lops kf By NIEL CELLERS News-Review Sports Editor Iickwood Motors of Roseburg took the drivers' eat in the Hrt round of the Area IV Legion base ball playoffs Sunday night at Le gion Field by edging the invad ing Klamath Falls Falcons, 2-0. Tom Hobbs, ace right-hander of the Roseburg crew, recorded his 10th victory against one defeat. He went the full nine Innings to slop the Falcons. Tonight the Falcons and Lock' wood Motors will square off in the second game of the best-of-three series. Game time at Klam ath Falls' Gem Stadium is 7 p.m. If the Falcons win tonight's game the third game will be played Tuesday night at .7 in Gem Sta dium. , Hobbs scattered six hits all singles over the nine-inning route and issued three walks. The fireballing right-hander whiffed 12 Falcons In picking up bis 10th vic tory of the season. Opposing Hobbs was au-stater Marv Edwards. Edwards limited Roseburg to five hits, walked four and struck out six. Edwards used a variety of sharp-breaking curves, mixed with a good fast ball to hold the local squid's hitting to a mini mum. Roseburg's winning run crossed the plate in the third inning. Bob Manning found himself behind Ed wards on a one-and-two count, foul ed off one pitch to stay alive. H then picked his pitch and sent the ball sailing over second base to ward the wall in right-center field. The liner dropped between the out fielders and rolled to the fence. While the center fielder was chas ing the ball Manning raced around to third. Ron Polley followed with a base on balls to put two Roseburg run ners aboard. French brought Man ning home with a deep fly to center field. Manning tagged up and scor ed easily after the catch. The next two batters went out and Rose burg enjoyed a slim 1-0 margin. Loekwood Motors added an in surance tally in the sixth stanza. The unearned run scored when Doug Coplln reached second on an outfield error and scored on a double by Arana. The Falcons left a total of eight base runners stranded during the game. The only serious scoring threat came In the seventh inning, saker to send a sharp grounder at short-stop Marv French. French flipped to Avery at second base, who in turn whirled and threw to Dennis Arana at first to nip Hun saker. Edwards led off with a single, then was forced at second by Kent Franklin. Larry Smith followed with a base blow which sent Franklin to second. The South Douglas team includes players from Glendale, Myrtle Creek, Riddle, Days Creek, and Canyonville: with North Douglas players coming from Winston-Dil-lard, Sutherlin, Oakland and Ten- mile; and Curry County's team coming from Bandon and Gold Beach. ,' The tourney opens Wednesday at 8 p.m. as North Douglas takes on Roseburg at Legion Field. Curry County and South Douglas tangle at S p.m. Thursday on the Riddle baseball field. The losers of these two contests will play at 8:30 p.m. and the winners at 8:30 p.m. Friday. The winner of Friday's first game will then play the loser of ine second game Friday in a con test scheduled for 1:30 D.m. Satur day. The winner of this Saturday afternoon contest will then face game for the championship at 7 p.m. with a second meeting of these same two clubs to follow immediately if it Is needed. Threat Erased A fourth-Inning threat was eras ed on a fast double play. After Le voy Young had singled to start th inning, Hobbs got Kent Hun- Manning paced the Roseburg at tack at the plate with a perfect game. The flashy third baseman collected a triple, a single and two walks off the offerings of Edwards. Arana was 2-4 for the game and Hobbs had the remaining hit for Roseburg. Edwards and Young each had 2-4 records at the plate for the Falcons, while Lanny Guyer and Larry Smith each picked up lone singles. With French and Gordon Avery on base with no outs Doug Coplin popped up to the Fal con short-stop in short center field. The ball was ruled an infield fly and when the short-stop dropped the ball French and Avery took off. The throw caught French at third and he was called out. How ever, as Coplin was automatically out it was not a force at third. The umpire ruled that French slid in under the tag putting runners at scond and third for Roseburg. Franch was trapped trying to score on a grounder and Beamer died out to center field to end the inning. The dead line was set because the Hawaii, team had to catch a plane back to the Islands. Vancouver was leading 4-2 in the ninth inning when Hawaii's Stan Palys tied the score on a two-run homer. The game will have to be either replayed or re sumed from the 10th in Hawaii because the schedule for the Islanders al Vancouver is com pleted. The Islanders now hold a 2-1 record in their scries with the Mounties with the fourth came dangling. The Salem Dodgers continued to hold a three and one-half game lead over second-place Yakima in the Northwest League today after both teams split doublcheaders Sunday. Tri-City downed Salem, 2-1 in the first game of a twin bill but the Dodgers came back to win the second contest, 6-5, in 15 in nings. Lewiston defeated Yakima. 5-1, in the second game after the Bears had won the opener. In the other Sunday action, Eu gene defeated Wenatchee, 2.1 and 5-4 in a doubleheader. Monday thr Friday Drain's American Legion junior baseballers ended league play Sat urday night, splitting a double header with South Eugene on the Drain field. Drain copped the first counter 5-4, then dropped the second game by a 13-1 margin. In the first game South Eugene drew first blood in the top of the first inning. A single, two bases on balls and two Drain errors allow ed three runs to cross the plate for the visitors. Drain quickly en tered the scoring column in its half of the initial inning. Mike Blomberg drew a free pass and Gary Cox promptly laced a four bagger over the wall in right cen ter to make it a 3-2 ball game at this point. Contisr Tied Drain tied the contest In t h e fourth. Rich Wales was safe on an error and crossed the plate when Cox singled. In the sixth inning. South Eu gene's Randy Coin homered, mak ing it a 4-3 ball game.
