Leading
i NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa ,
-l PI) The lavender and old
lace mob clung grimlv to the
lead in the PGA golf champion-
: ship today with 39-year-old Doug
Ford carrying a one-stroke ad
vantage into the third round.
It was 50-year-old John Barnum
on the head end in the first
round, and when his "nerves just
gave out," Ford hit the young up
starts with a 33-3669 and a 138
total which put him on top.
. The younger brigade was hav
ing more than it's share of trou-
, bles over the long Aronimink
vjuii viuu truurse, wnai wan la
vored Arnold Palmer shooting a
iwo-over-par "pightmare round"
, of 72 which left him five strokes
off the pace and U.S. Open cham
pion Jackie Nicklaus carding a 74
for 145 and a seven-shot deficit.
Ford, who won this one seven
years -ago and before Palmer and
Nicklaus were on the national
scene, had as his closest competi
tors a trio consisting of 41-year-old
Cary Middlecoff, 37-year-old
Georce Baver and vounester
Gary Player. They were in a
IRree-way tie, one shot back at
139.
Matchts Barnum's Round
Middlecoff matched Barnum's
opening round course record of 66
to move into contention. Play
er shot a 67 and Bayer chipped
into the cup from 25 feet off the
green on the final hole for a par
round of 70.
Two strokes off the lead at
even par 140 came Barnum and
Bob McCallister. Barnum skidded
to a 74 and McCallister a 66.
Bob Goalby, one of the young
er tournament stars, was in solid
striking distance at 141 while at
142 came five others: Frank
Stranahan, Marty Furgol, Julius
Boros, Jackie Burke and Bobby
Nichols.
The field was well bunched aft
er that, with Palmer leading
those at 143, who included former
champions Jim Ferrier and Dow
Finsterwald and former Open
champion Jack Fleck and Dave
Marr.
Had Seven Bogeys
"It was a miserable round and
I hope it's out of my system,"
: said Palmer, who carded seven
bogeys against three birdies and
an eagle. His birdie on the 610-
vard par five ninth and his eagle
on the 541-yard par five 16th both
1 came as result of picture shots
f with a three wood.
"Now I need a real good third
j round to get back in the run
J - ning," Palmer said with obvious
-. determination.
So, too, did those behind him.
' For one stroke back of him at
: 144 six shots behind Ford
t came Chick Harbert, who had
' a first round 68; Don January,

Pacific Coast League Roundup
By United Press International
Seattle's Sicks Stadium returns
to its normal life as a Pacific
Coast League park today after a
brief fling as an amateur boxing
arena.
Seattle defeated the Salt Lake
City Bees, 7-4, in the first game
of a doublcheader Friday night.
The Bees came back to down the
Rainiers, 5-2, in the second game
as the two teams squared off with
fists.
In the eighth inning. Salt. Lake's
Gordy Lund accused George Spen
cer, Seattle relief pitcher, of
throwing at him. Lund stormed
toward the mound, bat in hand.
Players from both teams
streamed onto the field and Se
attle's Elmer Singleton swung at
Lund. An unidentified Salt Lake
player punched Singleton, but or
der was restored and plate um
pire Paul Kelly kicked out Lund
for charging the pitcher.
In less swinging contests Fri

in seven runs.
The Mounties led off with three
runs in the first inning at Van

4-3 in the third inning. Hay Men

and Ron Henry hit a home run
with two on to ease the Mountles

At Spokane, the Indians- sur

Softball Victory
Bill Bates led the Vet Patients
(o an 8-7 victory over the Latter
Day Saints in YMCA Church
League Softball action.
Bales connected for a Uvo-run
base in the bottom of the seventh
inning to give his team the vic
tory. Staging a four-run uprising in
the sixth the LDS nine took the
lead. The short lead from the sixth
until the final half of the seventh
was the only margin enjoyed by
LDS.
In addition to his home run,
Bates had a triple and a single to
give him a 3-4 record at the plate.
McClintock and Rick Bryant were
each 1-2 for the winners. Joe
St rick line had a 2-4 record at the
plate for LDS.
Bates pitched the win for the
Vets, getting 15 strike outs. Strick
ling was charged with the loss.
The win came on the heels of a
forfeit and boosts the Vets record
to 3-3-1 for the season. The tie
came against Conservative Baptist
