o Kbcktfood f Captures League Crown i ly NIEL CELLERS Newt-Review Sports Writer Roseburg's American Legion jun ior clinched the Doug Lane League crown for the seventh time in eight years Saturday by dump ing the invading Cottage Grove nine in a pair of counters. After making certair. of the league championship, Roseburg traveled to Camp White Sunday and lost a pair of encounters to tht host Mcdford squad. Lockwood Motors belted Cottage Crave, 11-1, to grab the league title Saturday, then added icing to the cake with a 9-2 victory in the second half of the doubleheadcr. Sunday Medford became the first team to manage two victories over the powerful Roseburg squad. Med ford took the first outing 4-2 and won a six-inning second game 4-3. Williams And Hobbs Dick Williams and Tom Hobbs handled the pitching Saturday for Lockwood Motors, picking up wins r.o. 7 and 9 respectively. Williams set the visitors down on two hits, walked three, hit one and struck out six. Hobbs, Roseburg's fire balling right-hander, struck out 11, issued five bases on balls and was tagged for five base blows. Gordon Avery and Ron Polley were the big hitters in the first game with 2-4 and 2-3 records. In the second game against Cottage Grove the attack was led by Av ery's two triples, Doug Coplin with a double and a triple, and Jim B-amer and Bob Manning with two singles each. Cottage Grove (cored first in both games. In the opener the vis itors nicked up a run in the third inning when Randy Byrd was hit by the pitcher, went to secona on Jim Rhoadcs' walk, took third on Gary Vogler's single and scored when the ball got away from Rose burg's center fielder. Roseburg Took Lead Roseburg took the lead in the bottom of the third with two runs. Polley led off with a single, stole second and moved around on an error which allowed Lyle Charon to reach first. Charon moved onto third on another miscue and scored on a wild pitch. Drain Earns Split In Doug-Lane Action With Springfield Team Two runs after two were away in the bottom of the eighth inning earned the Drain American Le gion juniors a split in a Doug-Lane League twin-bill against the invad ing Springfield nine Sunday. Drain won the eight-inning open er 3-2, and Springfield bounced back to take the second game 6-0. In the first game the Drain crew found itself behind 1-0 after two innings of play. In the second game Cottage Grove took advantage of two walks an unsuccessful fielder's choice and a ground out to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Rose burg bounced back with one in the bottom of the initial inning, then took the lead in the third. The third inning rally was start ed by Avery's first triple of the game. Coplin followed with a dou ble and finished his trip around the base path on an error. Glen Fortune's three run homer in the fifth inning moved Lockwoods out of reach of the visitors. Roseburg Scored Two Medford gave up two runs to Roseburg in the first two innings of Sunday's opener, then shut the gate on the invaders. Avery came around for the first run after sin gling. Beamer drove Avery home with a scratch single. Bob Man ning's 400-foot circuit clout added the second run. Medford bounced' back with a single run in the bottom of the second and added two in the fourth to take the lead. The fourth in ning saw Bob King, winning pitch er, single with one out. Dick Def fley walked and Don Anderson doubled to drive in the two runs. An insurance run was added in the sixth when King led off with a triple. Three hits followed the tri ple, but no more runs crossed the plate. The second game saw Rosebure take a 1-0 lead in the third in ning, only to see Medford tie the score with a counter in the fourth. The two teams battled to a stand still until the sixth. Roseburg add ed two runs in the sixth and Med ford came back with three in its half of the inning to win... Winning Rally Medford's winning rally came on two hits, two walks, an unsuccess ful fielder's choice and one Rose burg error. The big-blow was pitcher Bill Enyart's single which drove in the winning run. Roseburg will wind up league play Tuesday it Riddle against the Winetrout Motors team of Myrtle Creek. Springfield scored a single run in the top of the eighth, but Drain fought back with two In the bottom of the inning to post the victory. Two Away Drain's winning rally was start ed by Darrell Cellers' walk after two were out. Cellers came around to score when Dennis Baldrldge misplayed DwiKht Pontius' dees fly to right field. Pontius romped to the third on the error and scor ed on a wild pitch to give Drain its fifth league win. Springfield's first run came in the second on a two-base error on Ray Jonos' outfield fly and a single by Jerry McKibben. In the eighth Springfield scored when Baldridge forced a runner at sec ond, Dan Cleveland singled, Jones walked and Don Mannila's ground er was bobbled. The tieing run in the sixth came for Drain on three walks and a sin gle by Cool. Cool brought Mike Blomberg home with his base blow. Pontius Tossed Win Pontius tossed the- win for Drain, giving up five hits and walk ing three. Dick Peglow was charg ed with the loss, though he allowed only two hits. Peglow walked sev en and his teammates committed five errors. Cool and Jim Byron had the lone Drain hits. In the second game Springfield picked up its runs by pairs. The visitors scored two runs in each the second, fourth and fifth frames off starter Richard Wales. Cellers came on in relief to toss near perfect ball the final two in nings. Cellers walked the first bat ter he faced, then retired the next six batters in order. Baldridge twirled a nifty two hitter for Springfield in the second contest. The big right-hander gave up a single to Byron in the second inning and a bunt single to Gary Cox in the fourth, while issuing only three free passes and hitting one batter. Second Inning A hit batsman, a walk and an in field single loaded the bases for Springfield in the second inning. After getting Bill Culver to hit to the shortstop who got the runner at the plate, a base on balls to Rick Hand forced the first run across. With two away Baldridge singled to bring In the second tally. Baldridge and Mannila each had two hits in the second contest to lead Springfield. MILWAUKEE (UPI) - Mickey Wright won the Milwaukee Wom en's Open golf tournament with a 289 total. j Rojelio Gutierrez limited the in vading Towers Motors Legion team of North Bend to three hits as he paced the Winetrout Motors squad of Myrtle Creek to a victory in the second game of a non-league doubleheader Sunday at Riddle. Behind Gutierrez's mound per formance, Winetrout Motors post ed a 4-1 victory after losing the first game 14-10 to the visiting coastal team. In pitching the win for Wine trout Motors, Gutierrez struck out six and walked two. The lone run off Gutierrez came on a fifth-in ning home run by Dan Rhode, op posing pitcher. Winetrout Scores The South Douglas contingent broke the ice in the second inning to take a 2 0 lead. With one away Bob Allen doubled, and with two onLs Tony Quinn singled sending Allen to third. Tom Morrison's double brought the two runners home. In the fourth inning Winetrout Motors added two insurance runs. Gary Paetz led off with a double and Allen followed with a sing! Quinn's second single of the game loaded the bases. Paetz raced home after the catch on Morri son's outfield fly, and an error on Rick Abrahamson's grounder al lowed Allen to score. Ouinn and Allen each collected two hits for the winners, while Morrison drove in three of the four runs. Four of Myrtle Creek s sev en hits in the second outing went for two bases. Early Laad North Bend built up an early lead in the seven-inmng opener. and held on to win. The Towers Motors crew scored a single run in the first, three in the second and one in the fourth to take a 5 2 lead. In the final three innings Myrtle Creek came just one run short of matching North Bend's nine-run output. Both teams rallied for five runs in the seventh stanza. Jackson 9 Tie For Title Douglas Veneer spoiled Jackson Wholesale's bid for an undisputed YMCA Twilight League champion ship Saturday by winning a 5-0 de cision over the wholesalers and losing a 2-1 game to Mock Motors. The Wholesalers defeat and Mock Motors win ends the two teams in a deadlock for the league title with identical 10-2 records. A play off game to decide the league champs will be held Wednesday at 6 at the VA diamond. In the opening contest Douglas Veneer defeated Jackson Wholesale behind the three-hit pitching of Paul Trent. This makes the sec ond time this season Jackson Wholesale has been defeated by the Veneer nine. Mike Coen banged out a triple to lead the Douglas Veneer bats men, while Frank Kinf collected a Single. John Pardon led the Wholesale attack with two hits in two trips to the plate. The second game saw Mock Mo tors score two runs in the bottom of the last inning to squeeze out 2-1 win over the Douglas Veneer squad. ' Cooper limited the winners to only three hits but two unearned runs proved to be the fatal dif ference. Larry Ruttcr led the win ners at the plate with two hits in three at-bats. John Brady led the losers with 2-3 including a triple, while Estel Shikc had a perfect 1-1. Douglas Veneer ended the league play with a 7-5 record. A few anxious moments were provided for the fans by Jim Bit tleston of Eugene. Bittleston soar ed off the track on the west turn and wedged his car between- two trees. The car had to be pulled out by the wrecker. Bittleston emerged unhurt from the mishap. In the special "News Hound" race first place went to Andy Fautheree, representing the News Review. Fautheree beat out Lee Tabor of KPIC-TV of Roseburg and Keith Gebers of KVAL-TV of Eu gene. The jalopies ran the B events at Saturday's races. Sam Gosso, Roseburg, won the trophy dash and Larry Ball, Glide, captured the B-Main event. Gosso was a victim in the B-Main when his car tangled , with Jim Ledbetter's ja lopy and ended upside down in front of the howling fans. Gosso escaped without injury.
