the Winetrout Motors American Le
gion juniors of Myrtle Creek never
managed to get ahead of the Cot
tage Grove squad Wednesday in a
Doug-Lane League counter
Cottage Grove scored a 6ingle
run in the first inning and Myrtle
Creek tied the game at 1-all with
a mark in the second atanza. How
ever, the Cottage Grove team con
tinued on the rampage for the next
four frames to record an 8-4 tri
umph. '
Jerry Carr pitched the win for
the Cottage Grove nine, allowing
only six hits over the nine inning
route. Rojelio Gutierrez and Don
Fisher did the pitching for Wine
trout Motors. Gutierrez was tag
ged with the loss as his team was
trailing 7-2 when Fisher came on in
relief.
At the plate Tony Quinn was 2-3
for the losers and Fisher was 2-4
Gutierrez's ninth inning triple was
the lone extra base blow for Myr
tie Creek. Leading Cottage Grove's
hit parade was Jim lihoades.
, Ithoades collected a home run and
two singles. Gary Voglcr and Bill
Velkenbcrg each had two hits.
Home Team Scores
Cottage Grove took the lead with
a single run in the bottom of the
first on two walks, a passed ball
and an error. Myrtle Creek tied
the count in the second when Bill
Markham walked and Quinn sin
gled. The home team moved back into
the lead in the second with two
runs. Ken Miller singled, Richard
Farrow walked and Velkenbcrg
singled.
Myrtle Creek stayed in Uie run
ning with a single run in the third.
Tom Morrison walked, but was
forced by Hick Abrhamson.
Mike Markham worked his way for
a base on balls and Fisher singled
to bring Abrahamson home. The
run in the third ended Myrtle
Creek's scoring until the ninth. In
the final inning two runs crossed
Creek Team

the plate for the South Douglas
crew. Quinn singled and Gutier
rez followed with a triple. Gutier
rez scored on Abrahamson's
grounder which was booted by the
host team.
While Myrtle Creek was waiting
till the pinth to do more scoring,
Cottage Grove picked up two runs
in the third, two in the fourth and
one in the fifth to build its margin.
The loss gives Myrtle Creek a 4
11 league record,, while Cottage
Grove now sports a 3-11 mark.
Myrtle Creek will be back in ac
tion Sunday before the home fans,
when Towers Motors of North Bend
invades for a 1:30 p.m. non-league
doubleheader. The next league
game for Winetrout Motors will be
July 17 when it hosts the powerful
Lockwood Motors nine of Roseburg
in a single game.

Eaton, Hein Hold Top Spots
Going Into Saturday's Races
Jay Eaton and Don Hein, both
of Roseburg, continue to battle for
the no. 1 spot among the top hard
top drivers at the Koscourg speed
way. Eaton added 39 points to his tot
al last week, giving him 170 points
for the season. Last week s per
formance moved Eaton Into an
even stronger hold on first place.
Hein is running second with 141
points. Hein scored 34 points dur
ing the last action.
The other drivers will be out to
blank the two local aces Saturday
when the hardtops circle the track
again. Saturday s racing action
will be divided between the hard
tops and the jalopies.
A featured race will mgmigni tne
action. In the special "News
Hounds Race" will be three driv
ers active in different news media.

of Roseburg, and Andy Fautheree
will carry the banners of the News-

local drivers will travel to Cottage
Grove to compete in the races at
the Cottage Grove Speedway at
1 p.m.
In addition to the top positions
among the hardtop drivers, Don
Wilson of Reedsport jumped up a
notch to the no. 3 spot. Wilson
brought his total to 118 points,
dropping Bud Dix of Cottage Grove
down one slot to fourth. Dix has
109 points.
Newcomers to the top 10 include
Lloyd Edwards of Coos Bay with
81 points and Hal Welker of Rose
burg with 70 points. Edwards is
in seventh position and Welker is
tied for ninth.

pion Houston Oilers, has signed
his 1962 contract. The Oilers open
training camp next Wednesday.
ROSEBURG SWIMMERS are set to invade the Medford pool today and Saturday to com
pete in the Junior Olympics. Coach Larry Lermo reports that 22 youngsters will make
the trip, and several should do well in the meet. The top swimmers from throughout the

Soviet Thinclads
Leaving For U.S.
MOSCOW (UPI) Fifty-nine of
the Soviet Union's top track stars
leave today for what head coach

the toughest Soviet-American
track meet so far. " '

its weight in gold," the coach told
reporters who talked to him dur
ing the rush of last-minute prep
arations. , "
The team of 42 men and 17
women was to fly from here to
Paris, change planes, and arrive
in New York this afternoon. They
are expected to continue directly
to Palo Alto, Calif., where the
meet will bo held, July 21-22.
SMASH-UP. Billy Suiter, rookie driver at the Roseburg Speedway, tangled with another
car and hit the retainer fence last week at the hardtop action. Suiter will be back in action
this'week when the hardtops and the jalopies will agin share the spotlinght at Rose
burg Speedway. Time trials Saturday will begin ot 7:30 'p.m., with the roces set to
stort at 8.

Local Swimmers Open
In Junior Olympic Meet
The Roseburg' swim team is
scheduled to travel to Medford to
day to open against the top aqua
tic stars in the state in the Junior
Olympics.
Preliminary action for the girls
began at 10 this morning, with the
finals on tap for 7 tonight. Satur
day the boys will begin prelimi
nary racing at 10 a.m., and the
boys finals will be held at 7 p.m.
Coach Larry Lermo will be tak
ing 22 of his top stars to the meet.
Several of the Roseburg competi
tors are figured to be among the
top swimmers in the meet in their
respective specialities.
Medford's pool will have entrants
from almost every swim team in
,the state in action in the Junior
Olympics.
Roseburg girls competing at
Medford are Mary Bonebrake,
Kathy Fitzgerald, Pat Bonebrake,
Lori Benson, Jeanne Forrest, Dol
ores Pennell, Mariellen Lorenz,
Kathy McMullen, Pat Bissonette,
Denice Doyle, Diane Yates, Sue
Gum and Charla Person.
In the boys action Roseburg will
be represented by Scott Hicks, Ron
Frashour, Rob Williams, Chris
Longfellow, Bill Zimmerman, Bob
Pyle, Bill Werver, Frank Weaver
and Brian Stults.
In last week's triangular meet
with Medford and Grant? Pass two
Roseburg girls turned in top times
in the 13-14 girls breaststroke ac
tion, Miss Rhoden was clockd at
30.8 seconds and Miss Lorenz was
timed at 32 seconds flat. In the
girls 13-14 butterfly race Miss Mc
Mullen turned in a 2.2 seconds
time one of the best recorded in
the state this year.
Miss McMullen also will compete
in the girls 13-14 diving, an event
she won her last time out.
Frashour, Williams and Zimmer
man are expected to do well in
the Medford meet. Frashour post
ed three wins in leading the Rose
burg team last week. The local
star won .the boys 13-14 butterfly,
backstroke and individual medley.
Williams is strong in the freestyle
and butterfly events, while Zim
merman is Roseburg's leading con
tender in the breaststroke racing.
Zimmerman jumped up to take
the senior boys breaststroke race
last week.
Stults, a surprise winner last
week, will lead the local boys 9-10
contingent in the Junior Olympics.
Stults took top honors- in the
breaststroke action last week.
Bill and Frank Weaver carry
the hopes in the diving for the
Roseburg team.
