Accused Student
To Hear Verdict
BERLIN (UPIi- Stanford Uni
versity student Ruber! E. Mann
will learn Saturday the verdict of
a Communist court which heard
charges he tried to help an East
German escape from behind the
Iron Curtain.
A prosecutor urged Wednesday
at the conclusion of Mann's one
day trial that the 19-year-old Se
pulveda, Calif., youth be given a
prison term of 2'i years at hard
labor.
Observers believed Mann, ar
rested last January, probably
would receive a one-year sentence
and be released within several
months. The East German gov
ernment rarely holds convicted
foreigners for very long and Mann
has already been jailed for almost
six months.
Reports reaching Uie West but
not officially confirmed indicated
a co-defendant in Mann's trail re
ceived a one-year suspended sen
tence. He was identified as Uwe
Sturberg, 24-ycar-old East Berlin
locksmith, accused of receiving a
passport from Mann.
Western newsmen, U.S. Mission
observers and Mann's father were
barred from the courtroom.
West Berlin officials said they
had no evidence to substantiate a
statement in Washington by Cali
fornia Congressman Edgar W.
Hiestand that the court already
had found Mann guilty.
Mann came to Berlin last Jan-1
uary on a visit from Stanford's
overseas campus at Stuttgart, i
west uermany.
Commodity Groups
Have Adopted Budgets
SALEM (UPI)-The state Agri
culture Department said Wednes
day that Oregon's eight commodi
ty commissions have adopted
1962-63 budgets that total $619,870.
This, is $52,541 down from last
year.
The commissions are self help
groups whose purpose is to pro
mote and develop the commodi
ties they represent.
Budgets adopted were: Potato
Commission, $85,560; Dairy Prod
ucts Commission, $205,000; Filbert
Commission, $24,897; Fine Fescue
Commission, $42,500; Fryer Com
mission, $44,797; Beef Council,
576,000; and Highland Bentgrass
Commission, $18,405.
JURY INDICTED GILBERT
NEW YORK (UPI) - Runaway
financier Edward M. Gilbert has
been indicted by a New York
grand jury on charges of stealing
$1,953,000 from the E. L. Bruce
Co., District Attorney Frank Ho
gan has announced., r, - .
The grand jury returned a
twelve count indictment, each
count for a check Gilbert drew
on the Bruce accounts before his
flight to Brazil. The checks
Hogan said, were used to meet
margin calls in the slumping
