System For Determining Notional Champion Was Long Time Making oti l.i i . r. t,jL. ' l i 1. . . . . 1. That's the way it was with the years-long discussion among ro deo contestants and committeemen as they sought a way to determine the true national champions in the world's toughest, most individual istic sport, ltodco is about 80 years old. B. the point award system by which the champions in seven events and the AU-Around winner are deter mined is only a decade old. Rodeo Grows In the early years of rodeo, the vinners of Cheyenne Frontier Days .ere acclaimed the national cham lons. Later they had to win also . Pendleton, taking the "grand double," in order to win the title But rodeo kept on growing until it is spread through 38 states and Canada. Obviously, the old system was no longer reliable. Complicat ed formulas were discussed and discarded. They sought to tie the grand titles to a sum of the times in timed events and a sum of the points in judged events. Then the simplest formula pop ped up. Why not, the Rodeo Cow boys' Association, Inc., directors decided just give a point for every dollar won in prize money at recog nized rodeos? That proved to be the only prac tical method to determine champi ons in a sport with no leagues, teams or playoffs. In rodeo, every performer is on his own, paying his own transportation and his own entry fees wherever he decides he wants to try his skill.
