Centenarian Gets
Hospital Policy
WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt.
(AP) Insurance history was
made today when a woman 41
days shy of her luznd Dirthday
was issued a hospitalization pol
icy by the Vermont Accident In
surance Co.
Ellen Elizabeth Ferry, a spry
lass with sparkling sense of Hu
mor who chopped her own fire
wood at the age of 98, is anticipa
ting, with glee, her 102nd birth
day May 28, "so wa can have a
nice party. I like parties."
Mrs. Ferry is believed to be the
oldest holder of a hospitalization
policy in North America, says
I. J. Davis, agent for the insur
ance company. Davis said we
had no grounds to refuse her,
She apparently has no medical
history and ws consider her an
excellent risk."
Mrs. Ferry verified the health
factor. "I never bad a sick day
In my life," she beamed.
The policy, for which Mrs. Fer
ry pays $100.80 annually, includes
$20 a day in hospitalization bene
fits, $100 for emergency surgery
and $300 for regular surgery.
Mrs. Ferry has outlived her
brother, her six sisters and her
husband, Frederick, who died at
h-v one sister lived to be 101.
She was bom in North Ely,
Quebec, in 1860. Her parents,
Charles and Margaret Smith,
were natives of Ireland and Amer
ican citizens. They returned to the
United States about 1880.
Mrs. Perry's most vivid mem
ories are of her childhood when
she had to walk two miles through
dense forest to school.
"The forest was full of wolves
and bears," she said.
"We bad a small dog named
Coaly, because he was so black,
who walked to school with us each
day and scared away the bears
and wolves wtui his narking, we
met a bear almost every day."
Mrs. Ferry walks without as
sistance and requires glasses only
to read. Her hearing is failing a
bit but her wit is keen.
