Trollers Head South
SKATTl.E (API Japan is
moving about 2(1 troll fishing ves-
trls aouth of the Aleutian Islands
and Russia already ha about a
riuzrn trnllcrs in that area, the
Seattle Times reported Wetlnes
day.
Previously, the newspaper said,
Japan had confined trolling in
Alaska waters to the Bering sea.
with only exploratory thrusts
further south.
The Times' report was in a dis
patch from San Kranmco,
where the Pacific Marine Fisher
ies Commission is meeting.
"Some fishing industry leaders."
the Times story said, "fear the
southward march of foreign fleets
has begun."
Harold I.okkrn of Seattle, man
acer of the Fishing Vessel Own
ers' Association, said the Japanese-Soviet
actions represent a ser
ious threat to the halibut resource
protected by conservation meas
ures of the United States and Can
ada. l.okken proposed that the asso
ciation urge American and Canad
ian governments to ban imporU
from nations which disregard fish
eries conservation. Other industry
leaders said this was unrealistic
and Lokken's resolution was put
aside for later action at the San
Francisco meeting.
Ixikkrn said Japan harvested
12 billion pounds of bottom fish
in the Bering Sea this year and
Russian fishermen took one billion
pounds in the same area.
"As their fleet work down."
aid I-okken, "they will take the
fisheries, one by one. Someday,
we may find them right off Cape
Flattery, the Columbia River and
even the Golden Gate."
