Atomic Weapons
Seen For France
WASHINGTON (AP) France
may be getting close to becom
ing the fourth nation with atomic
weapons.
This was hinted in a statement
by the French armed forces min
ister. Pierre Messmer, that
France is beginning to achieve
significant results in nuclear
weapons development. (
The term significant results, he.
said this week, could mcani
manufacturing the weapons or j
having them in quantity.
Messmer declined to say at a
news conference how far France ;
hat progressed. But the master
ing of atomic weapons techniques
the earliest of the three stages
he mentioned would put France
on the threshhold of acquiring nu
clear armaments.
So far, only the United Stales,
the Soviet Union and Britain have
become atomic weapons powers.
