Supcrmaikets and neighborhood tores arc amply stocked with the traditional holiday birds. Turkeys are selling at an aver age of 29 cents a pound for birds weighing 18 pounds and up, 33 cents for 10 to 17-pound birds and 38 centg for birds under 10 pounds. ' This is 10 cents t pound cheaper than last year. Cranberries are in good supply and have been given a clean bill of health. Kor those who aren't turkey fanciers, hams and roasts are being widely advertised. A great variety of vegetahles and fruits is available to round out the holiday menu. Best buys on the vegetable counters are broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, Chinese cabbage, egg plant, endive, escarole, Romanic and iceberg lettuce, eastern on ions and potatoes, parsnip, tur nips, rutabaga, peppers, radishes, spinach, acorn and butternut squash, and golden and white tweet potatoes. In the good-buy classification are nearby anise beans, beets, brussels sprouts, carrots, celery, corn, cucumbers, green onions and leaks, mushrooms, western Span ish onions and russet potatoes, parsley, green Italian and yellow straight neck squash, Puerto Rico potatoes and greens. Best fruit buys are apples, cran berries, and Florida oranges and grapefruit. Good buys include avocados, limes, pears and grapes. For the nut dish there are chestnuts. Extensive Aid Given C. J. Ritchie, heallh and wel fare director for Adventist work in Oregon, stated that Adventist churches in the stale had dis persed 251,565 articles of clothing and other materials and contri buted 185,746 hours of labor. Cash donations by members to relief work totaled $33,777 during 1960. The Roseburg health and wel fare society of the church is as sociated with the McKenzie dis trict Adventist Health and Welfare Federation. Mrs. Linnea Thurn hofer is director of the local work. There are 94 Adventist welfare groups operating in the state, -13 of these being regular health and welfare centers. 78,282 personsre ccived aid in 1960, Ritchie said. Last year the denomination gave aid to 1,645,940 people in North America, its members giving 3. 328.880 volunteer hours to this work in addition to materials and cash.
