Steve won the bond when a Doster he entered in a Junior Chamber con test won first prize. The contest was aimed at the need for safety belts in automo biles, with the most unique poster winning first prize. Lester Hazen, RHS speech In structor and president of the Jun ior Chamber of Comme,-e, organ ized the contest. The manufactur er of the scat belts who supplied the Jaycees with the seat belts for their recent drive, sponsored the contest. Roseburg Students Attend Workshop Roseburg Senior High student li brarians attended the fall work shop Nov. 16 at Oakland High School. Attending were Delores Baugham, Yvonne Bcliveau, Edna Dcnsmore, Bill KUigc, Carole Gcd ties, Judy Harris, Janie Hohstadt, Diane Klocek, Judy and Shirley Lorentz, Paula McCrorcy, Susan Pcrle, Linda Plotts, Marvin Schnei der, Eunice Toles, Betty Trammel and Sharon Palmer. Gladys Monger, RHS librarian, Mrs. Clem Schneider and Diane Klocek assisted in transportation. Marian Greene, Reference Li brarian at University of Oregon, talked on bulletin board displays at the meet. In the afternoon, Charlotte Hyre, Roscburg Douglas County Librar ian of the Bookmobile, told of a armchair trip around the world with books. Later, Gladys Monger and Shir ley Lorentz, president of the RHS Library club, gave a demonstra tion of mending books. GOP, Demos Speak To Problem Classes James Richmond, a member of the Republican state central com mittee, and Al Flcgel, democratic party leader from Roseburg, spoke at Roseburg High School Thurs day and Friday. The two addressed students in modern problems classes on the origin of their respective political parties, following the talks, stu dents were given time for a ques tion and answer period. Wide Knowledge Of Young Scholars Amazes TV Host Gilbert Youth Service A man who each week picks the brains of the country's college stu dents in search of fascinating piec es of information has great respect for the brain power of the teenager. "There's nothing so stimulating as working with this group," says Allen Ludden, master of ceremon ies at the College Bowl. There were 88 others who re ceived a rating of 3.0 or belter. Slide Rule Classes Ready At Roseburg A series of classes on the use of the slide rule are planned to be presented by George Larson, math instructor at - Roscburg ii 1 g n School. It was announced at the Nov. 13 meeting of the RHS Math and Sci ence Club that the classes will be conducted during the seventh pe riod. Terry Watters, senior at RHS, gave a brief deoinonstration and explained the uses of the slide rule at the meeting. Also during the meeting, mem bers joined science teams in vari ous classes of science. The mem bers will conduct experiments and make projects in their fields. As advance man for the Shakespearian actor Maurice Ev ans, Ludden ranged the country talking to high school audiences about the playwright. To his sur prise, he found he had to step up his material to keep pace with bis keen listeners. The current crop of students he finds has the same limitless cur iosity. To them be has addressed several books for the under-21 set, in which he urges college students to avoid the perils of early special ization. "Colleges keep insisting on an early major, when actually the four-year liberal arts program should be a survey course. Choice of a career can come later on," 2 RHS Students Win Band Award Awarding of the Roscburg High School "Band Member of the Week," was held Nov. 14, in the marching band class. Two win ners, Patty Beardsley, junior, and Walt Samuelson, senior, were se lected for their outstanding march ing for the week ending Oct. 12. Patty plays the flute and has been a member of band for seven years. She has won top honors for two years at the solo contest held in Grants Pass. Samuelson plays the coronet and has been in band for eight years. He has also won top honors at the solo contest. Both students have been the win ners of scholarships to the Uni versity of Oregon summer seession. They were chosen by Gary Wil son, RHS band director, and other judges. Sophs, Seniors He Honor List Sophomores and seniors tied with each other for number of student with perfect grades on the Oak land High School first nine-week honor roll. Sophomores were Joan Archer and Laurey Hansen and seniors were Norman Baird and Cheryl Peterson. G. Hedrick, U. S. Navy, has notified Mr. and Mrs. J. Jarvis Robertson of this city, that their son, Jim, has passed his pre-flight training school of instruc tion at the Pensacola, Florida. Navy Flying Base, and was one of 34 out of 59 completing the course. With 25 of the 34 passing the course, he has been sent to Saufley Field, out of Pensacola, for flight training. Jim was graduated from Roseburg High School and attend ed University of Oregon, before joining the Marines and taking his flying training at the Pensacola Navy Base. r 'ii - '"av. She is senior and has been a cheerleader since her freshman year. Her other activities are: President of the GAA; secretary of the student body; and a mem ber of the local and national honor society. Roseburg Students Set For Teen Date Show Roseburg High School students will be guests on tonight's Teen Date show on KP1C television at 7 p.m. Besides the reading of current events from RHS, the students will introduce a new dance to the tele vision audience. A Teen Date Christmas Ball will be held sometime during Christ mas season. Ceremony Honors New Eagle Scouts Two Douglas County boys have achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scout movement. Herbert Sims and Robert Shel by were certificated this month al a ceremony in Myrtle Creek. Sims is a member of the Myrtle Creek troop, but Shelby recently moved to Eugene to become a member of Troop 180 there. A cake with the Eagle motif was furnished at the ceremony by the Eugene troop. George O'Mcaly, a former Ea gle himself, and holder of the Silv er Beaver for adult work in scout ing, gave the Eagle Scout charge to the boys. Employment Rep. Gives Talk At Douglas High Robert Harvic of the Oregon De partment of Employment presented a talk to Douglas High seniors recently on the services made available by the agency, Harvie spoke on the purpose of the employment service and gave some facts concerning the labor market.
