PTA Council Alters Name 1 A nam change to conform to new Oregon state PTA bylaws was made at the last meeting of the Roseburg PTA Council held at the Fremont Junior High School, ac cording to Mrs. Robert Snider, chairman. , Title Chang I The organization will now be known as the Roseburg PTA Co ordinating Committee. The title of the president and vice president I will now be chairman and vice chairman. j The membership will still con sist of the officers of the commit- ' tee, the president and vice presi dent of each PTA in school dis trict 4, or their alternates; the superintended an(j assistant su perintendent of schools; and the principals, or their representatives. Farm Federation Hears Planning For Rural Defense Kirk Lowell, agriculture instruc tor at Roseburg Senior High School, was the guest speaker at the meeting of the Douglas County Farm Bureau Federation held re cently at the Douglas Fairgrounds. In his talk, Lowel'. described the courses given in preparation for entering into various fields of agri culture. Results of studies comparing two 42-year-old Douglas fir stands show trees on th unthinned stand worth $90 an acre, whereas those on the thinned stand wer worth $375, an acre. Junior Republicans Hear Dudley Walton Dudley Walton, a Roseburg at torney, gave a history of demo cratic government and a report on the origin of modern political part ies to highlight the first meeting of the Roseburg Junior Republi cans Club Wednesday night at the Courthouse. i He emphasized the impact of the Civil War and Reconstruction period. He said the influence of this part of the country's history is still reflected in politics. He concluded by urging the young people to take an active part in politics. This is necessary, he said, if freedom is to survive. The next meeting of the new or ganisation of high school students is scheduled Dec. 6 at 7:30 p.m. in the Courthouse auditorium. A noon potluck and gift exchange will be featured. XI 5 To Attempt 50-Mile Climb WASHINGTON (AP Air Force Col. James T. Stewart says X15 pilot Joe Walker will "shoot for 50 miles high next week." Stewart told the Institute of the Aerospace Sciences meeting here that Walker will attempt to raise the XlS's altitude record by about 10 miles from the mark set last month by Air Force Maj.
