New Intercepf
Sysfem Told
By Air Force
IIANSCOM FIELD. Mass. (AP)
The Air Force reported recently
that a new communications sys
tem can make interception nf a
target bv a fighter plane just as
automatic as it is with an un
manned missile.
Maj. Oen. Kenneth P. Berg
quist of the electronic systems di
vision of the Air Force Systems
Command announced successful
testing of the new communica
tions setup.
Known as the Time Division
Data Link (TDDL) it is nick
named "Tidille" by the project
personnel. Gen. Bergquist ex
plained that it enables one ma
chine to pive instructions to hun
dreds of airplanes faster than any
other known means.
When an aerial tared is detect
ed, TDDL receives command in
structions from a computer in
coded form. The computer directs
distribution of the commands
to transmitter sites scattered
throuahout the country and then
beamed to aircraft.
This makes it possible for the
central battle station to do almost
everything for the pilot once he
is airborne except fire his guns
or rockets.
