Women's Club Has Guest Day Each year the Roseburg Worn an'i Club, member of the Oregon Federation of Women's C 1 u b I, opens the fall season with a mem bership affair which i always an ticipated with pleasure by the women of Roseburg. Thin year a dessert luncheon wai held in the social hall of the Presbyterian Church. A pink and Kreen motif wai car ried throuKhout the decorations and the social hall was resplend ent with lovely floral arrangements nf pink cactus dahlias and greens on both pianos and the fireplace mantel, Each of the long lunch eon tables held flouting pink dahl ias in crystal bowls. The flowers were furnished by Mrs. Albert Mi relli and Mrs. A. J. Ellison and were arranged by Mr. O. L. Feld Vamp, Mrs. J. M. Boyle and the Walker sisters. Mrs. F. C. Filzpat rick and Mrs. Albert Mirelli had charge of the guest book and as Mrs. Ira Seitz greeted members, a corsage-sized pink dahlia wan pinned on her guest. Mrs. Clyde Carstena and Mrs. Paul Dillon pro vided background music during the luncheon. Arrangements for the large af fair were under the very able chairmanship of Mrs. Kenneth Ford and Mrs. Albert Morene with the Mesdames Clifford Aten, Paul Rarcus, J. M. Boyles. Stan ford Buel, Bruce Elliott, M. J. Newland, Orvis Ford. Clifford Thomas, Vernon Bonebrake and Al bert Micelli assisting. During the meeting conducted by Mrs. N. C. Wallin. letters of ap preciation were read from : The board of trustees and employes of Douglas Community Hospital for the recent beautifying of the hos pital grounds; Dr. Robert Kidder and Dr. Merker for the more than 7IH hours of volunteer work done at the Veteran's Hospital by worn- ssssssssswssp - v 5 f sri 5T Si 'ft PROFESSOR JANNELLE MOORHEAD, consultant ir health I and human welfare ot University of Oregon, was flie guest speaker ot the Roseburg Womon'g Club annual guest-day offoir held Tuesday ot the First Presbyterion Church Prof. Moorheod has held her position ot tht University of Ore gon tine 1946, en of the club as well as furnish ing money for refreshments for the monthly birthday parties and for the music at dinner; members of the Douglas County Fair Board and Ray Doerner for the display of of the prospective community achievement project which the women of the club built and which won second prize; and from the YMCA and Wayne Schulre thank ing the club for the $420 check to furnish a room at the "Y". A suitable plaque will be mounted on the door of the room in their name and for the hundreds of hours of vol.inteer work done by members of the club to make the "Y" a reality. Reports were given by Miss Alice t'eland on the recent success ful rummage sale. Mrs. Clyde Car stens explained the cook book project. G. O. Yates, vice president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, spoke breifly on the use of "fety belts. Mrs. Clyde Carstens accompani ed Mrs. Gene Cooksey when she sang two numbers, "None But the ljiiifly Heart" and "The Island." In the absence of the public af fairs chairman, Mrs. Wallin told of the club's entering the Sears Roebuck lommunity Achievement Contest. Mrs. A. W. Buckleair Introduced Professor Jannelle Moorhead. con sultant in Hralth and Human Welfare at the I niversity of Ore gon since 1946. Mrs. Moorhrad is a world traveler and in while on a Sabbatical, toured in Japan, Thailand. Pakistan. Iraq and Tur key. In the summers nf 1.9 and 19K0 she conducted study tours in I SSR and the Scandinavian cuun tires. In 19t0. she conducted the first study tour of the ISSR for the Oregon State System of Hish- er Fduration. She has traveled in Cuba. Mexico and Canada, study ing child health and weltare. Presently, she is conducting a seminar in Myrtle Creek and New port on looking at services for children under Communism, So cialism and Democracy. These courses are given under the gen eral extension division cf the I m versily of Oregon. Past Grand Guardian of the State of Oregon Mamie Wilson and Harry Smith were the installing officers and were assisted in the ceremony by Eva Feero and Ruby Peterson, past guardians of Bethel S3; Esther Hogg past guardian of Bethel 18, Myrtle Creek; Nadine Stearns, past guardian of Bethel 42, Oakland; and Virginia Laur ance, retiring guardian of Bethel S3. Maxine Vance Now Mrs.- Dean Mason The First Methodist Church of Ashland was the setting for one of the most beautiful weddings of the season at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 20, when Miss Maxine JoAnne Vance, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Vance of Tenmile, was united in marriage to Dean Sterner Mason, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Mason of Ashland. The Rev. P. Malcolm Hammond performed the impres sive double-ring ceremony in the presence of ISO friends and rela tives. Tall baskets of lavender and pink gladioli and graceful candel abra graced the altar. The can dles were decorated with pink and lavender ribbons. Lighting the candles before the ceremony were Nels and Ralph Hult. The traditional wedding march es were played by Mrs. Annabelle Davis, aunt of the bridegroom. She accompanied soloist David Deller who sang "O Promise Me" before the ceremony and "The Lord's Prayer" as the couple knelt on a white satin pillovF. Given in mar nage by her father, the bride was beautiful in a floor-length gown of silk organza over taffeta, with fit ted bodice, long sleeves and Sabri na neckline. The bouffant skirt was caucht with an applique of lace centered with sequins flowing into a chapel train. The skirt and train were edeed with a wide band of scalloped lace. The veil of hand- rolled silk, fingertip in lengtn, was held by a cap of Chantilly lace de signed with a halo ot lace rosettes, pearls and iridescent sequins. She carried a cascade bouquet of white ' carnations centered with a large white orchid. Mrs. Rodney Stricky of Klam ath Falls, college classmate of the ! bride, served as matron of honor. She wore a pink satin sheath dress with a pink lace overskirt. Brides maids were Miss Bonnie Vance, sister of the bride: Connie Herman and Miss Sally llornecker. Mrs. Hormon and Miss Hornerker svire I lovely in lavender satin sheath dresses with matching lace over- skirts. Miss Vance was costumed in pink, her dress styled identical ly to that wor.i by the other brides maids. All wore float veils and carried bouquets of lavender and pink carnations. The flower girl, Miss Julie Powell, cousin of the bridegroom, was dainty in a pale pink or ganza flock with lavender cummer bund. She carried a pink and lav ender basket filled with white rose petals. Ring- bearer Timmy Rust carried the rings on a heart-shap- eo. saun pillow edged in lace. Gregg Monroe, hiah school and college friend of the bridegroom, acted as best man. Ushering was done by Ha' Titus, brother-in-law jof the bridegroom; George Ma son, brother of the- bridegroom; Loran Hall a"d Richard Gunther. For her daughter's wedding. Following the ceremony, Mr. and Mrs. Vance were host and hostess at a reception in the church par lors. Serving the cake were Mrs. Virgil Vance, aunt of the bride, and Mrs. Paul B. Hult. Coffee and punch were served by Mrs. Hal Titus, sister of the bridegroom, and Miss Dottie Shirtcliff. Mrs. Greg Monroe and Miss Penny Vanderwyest had charge of the guest book. Mrs. Commie Walker, Miss W anda Howard and Miss Audrey Jennings had charge of the gifts. After the wedding and reception, the( newlyweds left on a honey moon to the Oregon and California coast. They are now at home to friends at 715 Sunrise Ave., Ash land. For traveling, the new Mrs. Mason wore a black lace sheath dress with white accessories. On her shoulder she wore the orchid from her bridal bouauet. I The bride attended Tenmile School and was graduated from Douglas High School in 1937. This year she is finishing her final year at Southern Oregon College where she is majoring in elementary edu cation. To demonstrate how little news they receive, she told of being in Rus sia during the 1960 conventions here and they were unable to learn who bad been nominated for presi dent. She aaid that most profes sional people are not communists and most scientific people are most anxious to know other people. Liv ing quarters are terribly crowded. Interesting pictures were shown of I the subways which are lighted by nuge crystal rnandeliers and con tain art of great beauty, paintings and mosiacs. They are deserted during the day for everyone is working and are mostly used dur ing the rush hours.
