This is the stater purpose of the Roseburg Business and Profession al Women's Club which was or ganized in 1923 and this week is observing the 42nd anniversary cf the National federation of Bum r.'sj and Professional Women's Clubs. Club members believe that cit izenship u a responnbility ol prime importance. The organization takes pride in the fact that club members have turned cut 100 per cent for aU elections. Maude Kidder serves on the elec tion board. During vote campaigns, the club devotes an entire meet ing to a presentation of issues by the candidates. Stella Spencer, Goldie Brunn, Al via YvethereU. Others are Edna Helgeson. who teaches at Myrtle Creek and is junior past president; Thelma Kleshman, Riverside teacher; Florence Snedaker, Benson in structor and Dorothy Suskdorf, a music teacher. Teacher Since It? I Alvia S. Wetherell, a BPW mem ber for 25 years, began teaching at Benson School in 1928, retiring last June to take a trip to Europe. She received her bachelor of sci ence degree from Oregon College of Education, is a member and past president of American chap ter of Delta kappa Gamma, a na tional honor society for women in education. Another member. Charlotte Hyre, has charge of the Douglas County Bookmobile. This library unit makes 38 stops in a two-week tour of the county. A graduate of Colorado College of Education. Grey. Colo., Misi Hyre received her library degree from the Uni versity of Denver. Roseburg BPW was active in the campaign to es tablish a county library and sev eral present members, including chairman V. Vivian Logsdon, serv ed on the committee. The organization maintains an interest in programs promoting mental and physical health. Lillian Langsev is a medical technologist at Mercy Hospital A native Ore gonian, she received medical tech nology training at Northwest In stitute in Minnesota. She has had nine years of experience in this field. Gladys Welt, treasurer, is ex ecutive housekeeper and Daisy Mc Laine is a nurse a, the U.S. V et erans Administration Hospital. Public health and safety obiec-j lives are spearheaded ly such! members as Mrs. Ada Jane Dick' who has lieen employed in the Roseburg Public Health office for a numVr of years. One of the! club's key elforts in the saiely! field was the " safety sign'' pro-i gram of last vea,'. This project Kill be repeated in 1961. i Civil defense is another area of 1 activity. Special activities in observance of National BPW Week are beini! staged this week, including radio and TV presentations. Capping the observance will be a dinner in the Elks lodge at 7 p.m. Monday. Oct. 9. to which businessmen and businesswomen of the city are in vited. Member ef State Group When a woman joins Roseburg BPW. she automatically becomes a member of the state and nation al federations. National BPW is the largest organization of buM ness and pioicssioual women in the world The national federation grew out of a 1918 meeting called by Secre tary of Wai to coordinate tile na tion's wonianpower. An official or ganization was launched the next ear by 212 women meeting in St. Louis, Mo. The purpose of Aufdengarten'a visit is to assist the local congrega tion in maintaining the unity in thought and action displayed by the organization world widt in preaching and teaching work, it was announced. Aufdengarten visits each n? the 19 congregations in Oregon Ciiruil No. 2 for a week every six months. His visit is part of an advanced training program for Jehovah's Witnesses.
