BEND Lockwood motors ninth
inning rally fell short as Roseburg
and Oregon hopes for a trip to the
American Legion World Series
were dashed Sunday by the "Cin
derella" team from Hawthorne,
Nev., in the Western Regionals
here.
The scrappy Nevadans went wild
in the first inning, sending 14 bat
ters to the plate to rack up nine
runs. Hawthorne went on to build
up a 10-2 lead before Roseburg
came back with two counters in
the sixth, making it 10-4. Capital
izing on its third round-tripper of
the game Hawthorne grabbed an
11-4 lead going into the top of the
ninth.
Roseburg s hopes were revital
ized lor a short time in the final
stanza as five runs crossed the
plate and the tieing run was on
first with no outs. However, Neva
da held tight to grab an 11-9 vic
tory.
Boat Pomona
Saturday Lockwood's posted a 5-
4 win over Fomona, Calii., to re
main in the running for the West
Coast title.
Home runs played a big paTt in
the tournament for Roseburg both
for and against the Lockwood Wo
tors crew. In opening with a vic
tory over Anchorage, Alaska, the
local nine used homers to build up
the lead, then was plagued by
four-basers by Phoenix, Ariz., in
the first loss at Bend.
Bouncing back after the Phoenix
loss Lockwood Motors used two
grand-slammers to down Richland,
Wash. Saturday it was a solo cir
cuit clout by Cordon Avery which
gave Roseburg its margin, while
three home runs by Hawthorne
helped to eliminate the Oregon
champs Sunday.
Placed Third
Roseburg ended play in the Re
gionsl with a 3 2 record, and third
place. The creditable finish high
lighted a season which saw the lo
cal squad win 54 while losing only
eight. Hawthorne, the team not giv
en a chance at the start of the
lourney, will clash with Phoenix
at 8 (PUT) tonight for tne cnam
pionship needing two wins over
the Arizona champs to take the
crown. Should Hawthorne upset the
powerful Phoenix squad the final
game will be played Tuesday at
8 o.m. (PDT).
Toby Leigh's two-run smash
over the left-center field barrier
Dared Hawthorne's first inning at
tack. Allen Langendorf followed
eieh with the second home run
of the game, while pitcher Keith
Stauffer aided his own cause with
the third Nevada homer in the bot
torn of the eighth.
Coach Bill Harper used three
pitchers in an attempt to keep
Roseburg s hopes alive, blaner
Walt Edmonds faced four batters
before giving way to Arlan Foote
in the first inning, with Tom Hoods
coming on in the sixth to finish
the contest.
Tagged With Loss
Edmonds was tagged with the
loss as he issued three walks and a
single to the four men he faced.
With no ouls, one run in and the
bases loaded Foote was called in
from the bullpen. Foote managed
to get the first batter out, then let
fly with a wild pitch to allow
the tieing run to score. A squeeze
bunt put Nevada ahead before
Leigh and Langendorf teed off for
their round-trippers.
Foote remained in trouble as
triple, an error, two walks and
a single scored three more runs.
The curve balling right-hander then
settled down to limit Nevada to
two hits and one run for the next
four innings, llobbs took over after
a pinch hitter had been used in the
lop of the sixth for Foote. The ace
Roseburg hurler gave up two hits,
one a home run, in the three re
mnining frames.
Stauffer handled the pitching for
Hawthorne, and except for the
sixth and ninth frames proved
more than the Roseburg batters
could cope with. When the local
squad threatened to tie the score
in the ninth Dean Sisk was brought
in from center field to protect
Stautfer's win. Saturday Roseburg
fared the sizzling fastball o( Bill

six hits while striking out 12. How-

Against Hawthorne, a two-run up

Nevada more than came back

Foote came Ion to Ditch for Rose
burg and struck out the first man
he faced. On what appeared to be
a squeeze attempt foote threw be

home. The squeeze was then used
to move Nevada out in front by
one run.
At this point it started to look

Slashing Double
Sisk was met by a slashing dou

Avery. Avery continued on to third

Saturday night Hobbs was credit
ed with the win after relieving
Ron Lake in the 'seventh. Lake
used slow offerings to keep the Po
mona batters guessing, then
Hobbs showed his blazing fast ball
for the final three innings, and
Pomona could not get used to the
change.
Still it was Avery's home run
that provided Lockwood Mtrs. with
the margin Saturday. Avery
slammed the sphere over the right
field fence as the lead-off batter in
the top of the eighth. The blow
came after Pomona had tied the
count in the bottom of the seventh.
