Higher Tonnage
Seen For Oregon
Fruit, Nut Crops
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Higher tonnage is predicted this
year for all Oregon tree fruit and
nut crops except apples.
A report this week from Ore
gon State University said the ex
pected 430,000-bushel peach crop
would be an increase of 5 per cent
from last year but still would be
6 per cent under normal.
Stephen C. Marks, extension ag
ricultural economist at OSU, said
the estimated Oregon apple crop,
1.7 million bushels, would be near
ly 25 per cent below average.
This would be only idightly less
titan the 1960 output, however.
The prune crop will show the
greatest gain over last year,
about two and one half times.
Kven so, the predicted crop of
23.000 tons would be far less than
normal.
Bartlett pear growers are ex
pected to harvest 52,500 tons, a
gain of 15 per cent from last
year. Marks said the figure would
he 3 per cent less than the 10-year
average.
Walnut growers inticipale a
crop of 5.800 tons, nearly double
the tiny harvest last year. That
would be slightly less than the
10-year average, Marks said.
Blackberry harvesting is at Its
peak, with grower prices on Him
alayas and Evergreens mostly 10
rents a pound and a few 10V4,
Marks reported.
All other caneberry harvests
are finished.

Feeder Cattle
Hog Prices Up
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Feeder cattle and hog prices
moved sharply upward at the
North Portland livestock market
last week, but lower wholesale
prices and plentiful stocks of
lambs forced sheep prices down
ward. A recent report from Stephen C.
Marks, extension agricultural
economist at Oregon Slate Univer
sity, said slaughter steers and
heifers showed a 50 cent to $1.00
advance during the week, while
other cattle closed mostly steady.
"The upturn at Portland came
on the heels of last week's sharp
advances at Midwest markets
which this week maintained most
of the gain," Marks said. His re
port continued:
A good demand offset a volume
which was almost 25 per cent
arealcr than tho previous week
and held the advanced prices at
their higher level.
The week's top price was $25.25
the highest since early In May.
Heavy choice varieties brought
from $24.50 to 525.01).
Larger receipts this week forced
early advances on the hog market
to drop again, out me popular
grade butchers were mostly 25
cenls higher. The market closed
at $20.50 to $20.75 on U. S. No. 1
and 2, 190-220 pound butchers.
Early sales nit a new yearly nign
$21.50.
Slaughter lambs closed mostly
50 cents lower than last week al
though the supply was almost a
fourth smaller. Most choice and
prime slaughter lambs were
$14.75.
