By MRS. ARTHUR SELBY
Diamond Lake, the gem of the
Cascades, is booming again.
The fishing season started last
weekend, in good weather, with a
tremendous turnout of 3.000 peo
pie, and the jewel-like lake in the
shadows of towering Mt. Thielsen
(9.182 feet) and Mt Bailey (8,
360 feet) was dotted by 494 boats
the first day.
The fishermen, friends and fam
ilies crowded into the lodge, 129
trailer houses and a host of tents.
The result was a mighty busy
lake in the picturesque setting, and
most fishermen wauld agree it was
a successful venture despite the
numbers.
Game Department men estimat

On Big Squeeze
Lyle Charon was squeezed home
by Russ Stciner to give the Nazar
ene Church nine at 5-4 victory over
the First Methodist Church Tues
day in YMCA Church League ac
tion. The winners opened the scoring
with a single run in the first in
ning, only to see the Methodist
squad take the lead with a four
run second stanza. The Nazarcne
nine came back with one in the
bottom of the second and one in
the fifth, then scored two in the
sixth for the victory.
Bruce Steiner handled the pitch
ing for the winners, opposing John
Todd. Bernard Post had the lone
homer of the game for the Metho
dist team in the four-run second
inning.
After scoring single runs in the
first and second, the Nazarene
team came up with a lone tally in
the fifth on a triple off the bat of
Bill Post. The winning run in the
sixth inning came on the squeeze
play with Charon scoring.

$11 7,000 Total
Winnings ForFoyt
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Young
A.J. Foyt of Houston, Tex., picked
up an extra $6,575 today a per
sonal gift from owner Tony Hul
man of the Indianapolis Motor
Speedway that rounded out the
total purse for Tuesday's 500-mile
race at an even $400,000.
The total purse was a record,
and so was Foyt's winner's share,
hiked to $117,975 when Hulman
announced his gift at the victory
dinner Wednesday night.
The first place winnings topped
by $7,975 the money won last year
by Jim Rathmann. The total
purse was $30,850 more than the
$369,150 paid out in 1960.
Eddie Sachs of Center Valley,
Pa., won $53,400 for second place
Rathmann, who won $110,008
last year, look $5,270 for 30th
place.
Bob Christie of urants I'ass, ore.
got $4,850 as his share of the purse
in the Indianapolis 500-mile race
Tuesday.
Len Sutton, Portland, got $4,650.
Both of the Oregon drivers were
forced out of the race by engine
trouble before completing the 500.
Trout Egg Take Good
In Diamond Lake Waters
There is little doubt that the
rainbow trout egg take now in
progress at Diamond Lake will be
one of the best. Jerry Bauer,
game commission fishery biologist,
reports that the first spawn was
taken on May 10 and during the
next nine days more than 3,680,000
eggs were placed in the hatching
trays at the Diamond Lake hatch
ery. According to the last report,
more than 7 million eggs have
been taken and it appears the egg
take will exceed more than 10 mil
lion before spawning is complete.
According to the report, the av
erage size of Diamond Lake adult
fish is nearly two inches shorter
than last year. The main size
group of spawners is running in
the 17 to 19-inch group which is
almost identical in size to the fish
spawned in 1959. The size range
is greater than last year with a
number of spawning fish exceeding
the 24 inch mark. Last year the
bulk of spawners ranged from 19
to 21 inches, with about 3 per
cent reaching the 21 inch mark.
fish, ranging in sizes from 12 to
21 inches.
This run on the lake was just the
harbinger of a summer-long busy
spell. And personnel at the lake
are ready for them.
For lodging, the attractive Dia
mond Lake Lodge, complete with
60 employes, has 62 cabins and 10
rooms, as well as a restaurant, 140
boat rentals, two stores and two
gasoline stations.
The land for the lodge was leas
ed by the V. S. Forest Service to
the Diamond Lake Improvement
Co. The two principal stockhold
ers, John Koch and Bill Edes
manage all holdings and facilities'
of the company.
The trailer court operated by
Joe Hollcnquist under lease from
the Forest Service, has connec
tions for 64 units. Popularity of
the lake is also indicated by the
101 summer homes in the area.
For the picnicker, the picnic
area has 47 units. But there's some
thing for almost every water and
other outdoor sport.
Overseeing the activities at
the lake is the Diamond Lake
Ranger District personnel under
Ranger Dick Piatt and chief recre
ation guard, George Reynolds.
Three men police the campgrounds
and six-man lookouts-.
Don J. Tandy, Diamond Lake
District ranger, who directed a
tour for News-Review personnel
reported that fish for the lake
are supplied by the Diamond
Lake Fish Hatchery operated by
the state Game Commission. Wil
liam Wingfiels is superintendent.
Jerry Bauer, state fish biologist,
reported a million Kamloops trout
fry were planted in the lake in
1959, another million in 1960 and
still another this year. The 2-year-old
trout are the fish being caught
now. The limit is 10, with five
over 12 inches and five under. It
took four Game Department men
to check the catches on the big
opening day.
