    Walk Star Billed

TO PLAY WITH UVL BAND Bill Page, a saxophonist
with Lawrence Welk's band will play as featured soloist
with the Umpqua Valley League Honor Band next Mon
day in Roseburg.
Lawrence Welk Star To Appear
With Douglas County Honor Band
Bill Pace, a Lawreene Welk. or
chestra slar who plays 15 reed in
struments, will be guest soloist
with the Umpqua Valley League
Honor Band which will play in
Roseburg next .Monday.
The concert will start at 8 p.m.
in the Douglas County Fairgrounds
Community Building.
100-Piece Honor Band
The 100-piece honor band will be
comprised of the top band stu
dents from Riddle, Myrtle Creek,
Douglas, Glide, Oakland. Suther
lin, Yoncalla and Canyonville high
schools.
Proceeds from the concert will
he divided among the participating
schools to be used in furthering
individual school music programs.
Though only in his thirties. Page
is regarded as one of the leading
doubling artists in the popular mu
sic field. He has also appeared in
numerous moving pictures and on

School Art Fair
More than 300 selected art ex
hibits from five schools of District
130-C will be on display Thursday
and Friday, April 13 and 14 at the
first annual Sutheriin School Art
Fair, to be held in the Sutheriin
Community Building. The public is
cordially invited to attend, accord
ing to Barbara Leisinger, News
Review correspondent.

he among the exhibits selected in
the elimination at the high school,
junior h ig h. and elementary
schools, according to Mrs. Ruby
Holloway, general chairman for
the event.
Sptcial Merit Ribbon
Each exhibit will be displayed
with the special merit ribbon of

noting selection for the fair.
Aiding Mrs. Holloway in setting
up the exhibits will be the high
school art classes under the di
rection of Duane Lopnow.
The fair will be open from 1 to
9 p.m. on Thursday and from 9
to 4:30 p.m. Friday. Mothers from
the various Sutheriin PTA units
will act as hostesses.

Wives Attend Meeting Of School Principals
BOAT SHOW STAR Lorraine Hanley, 14, baton twirler
of Maxine Merk's School of Baton, will be featured attrac
tion at the Umpqua Boat Show and Sports Foir this week
end. She has won many honors in baton contests through
out the state, including first place in twirling and strutting
competitions. She and other twirlers will perform novelty
and specialty numbers in daily shows with the Sally Hilt
Dancers. The shows ore scheduled at 1:30, 2:30, 3:30 ond
7:45 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. (Chris' Studio)

he was only 16. with Boyd Rae
burn's band. He played the clarin- ;

so Page, began taking lessons on
saxophone and flute so he could
fill in. Later, when he toured with
Rudy Vallee's band, he took les- j
sons on piccolo and bass clarinet.
After the war, he joined a ser-'
vice band which toured Europe :
with an entertainment troupe led
by Mickey Rooney. His versatility :
finally led him to free lance re
cording. Then, in 1953, he was !
hired by Lawrence Welk.

is county Director of Education.
The meeting was held at the
Oak Tree Inn in Winchester.
