The Rosoburg Embltm Club will
hold a plant and rummage sale at
the Elks Ballroom Saturday, April
1. The club especially wants dona
tions of plants and bulbs, as well
as planters, vases and decanters
and the like.
Mr. and Mrs. George Schaefer
of Cbokio, Minn., arrived in Rose
burg Monday for a visit with the
latter's son and daughter-in-law,
Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Salmonson,
and with her son-in-law and daugh
ter, Dr. and Mrs. Louis Michalek.
Radioman 3C Ronald R. Coff
man, U.S. Navy, son of Mr. snd
Mrs. Roseoe Parr of this city, has
just completed a 25-day leave here,
visiting friends and relatives. He
has been stationed in Seattle,
Wash., and has been transferred
to San Diego, Calif., where he will
be stationed until June when he
will leave for Japan to be gone
six months. Mrs. Cofftnan and
their baby son, David, will reside
in Roseburg at their home on Fair
mont Street during Coffman's absence.

rious illness of his mother, Mrs.
Viola Brown, who underwent sur
gery at a local hospital this week.

were in Roseburg Thursday. While
here they visited Dr. Frank Mer
ker at the VA Hospital and had
a tour of the hospital.
Mr. and Mrs. William Adair of
Bend were in Roseburg Saturday
to 'Visit with the former's mother,
Mrs. Margaret Adair, and with
Mrs. William Adair's parents, Mr.
and Mrs. R. L. Preston. They
made the trip here to pick up
Mrs. Adair's son, Martin, who has
been making his home in Rose
burg with his grandparents, and
take him to Bend where he will
reside with his mother and step
father. ,

the home of her son-in-law and

Nevue, who is manager of Miller's
here, went to Portland to meet
the visitors and brought them back
to Roseburg.
Mrt. Danny McLean and daugh
ters, Dennise and Jennie, have re
turned to their home in Pendleton
after a visit here with Air. and
Mrs. Donald Alunson and family.
The McLeans are former Rose
burg residents and have been re
siding in Bend since McLean was
transferred there by the telephone
company.
Mr. and Mrt. Seorty Burgeu
and three children have arrived in
Roseburg to spend a few days vis
iting at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Donald Alunson. The Burgess fam
ily is from Klamath Falls. They
formerly resided here, going to
Klamath Falls two years ago when
Burgess was transferred there by
the Bureau of Internal Revenue
for whom he works.
Mrt. Jack Watt had a gift booth
at the gift show in Portland and
again in Seattle this month. She
was accompanied to the show in
Seattle by her husband, who is
owner of the Jack West Diamond
Shop, and by her mother, Airs.

enjoyed a visit with her niece.

been called to Chico, Calif., to at
tend the funeral, of her one-year-old
nephew, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Byrd Crane.
Parents Visited
Mrs. Elva Kniglitcn and two
sons, from Ashland recently vis
ited in the home of her parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Koy Matthews. Mrs.
Knighten returned to Ashland on
Monday to lake tests this week at
Southern Oregon college, out tne
boys will remain at Days Creek to
spend the week with their grand
parents. Mrs. Oneta Hendrix and three
children motored to Portland re
cently to visit the former's son,
Merrill, who is in the Good Samar
itan Hospital. Merrill is to under
go another operation this week
when a bone from the leg will be
grafted to his back, and he will
be in a cast for about three or four
months.

day, where Larson was intiated
into the "Cootie" organization.

NEWBERG, Ore. (AP) Felix
Padron, 25, St. Paul farm worker,
Friday survived a vicious knifing
attack. Doctors said it took more
than 100 stitches to close his
wounds.
Stato police said Padron told
them he was attacked in his cabin
near St. Paul about 5:30 a.m. Po
lice are searching for the attacker.
Padroii was brought to the hos
pital here in critical condition. At
tendants later said he was out of
danger.

State Aid Asked
For Bend School
SALEM (AP) A Senate Ed-
ucation Committee was told that
the only full-time community col
lege in the state. Central Oreeon
College at Bend, will die without
financial nelp lrom the legisla
ture. A parade of witnesses at a
community college hearing
agreed mat voters win turn down
in the face of high property
taxes any proposals for local
financing of community colleges.
They said slate aid must ap
proach 100 per cent of the cost.
the programs should be ad
ministered cither by local school
boards or by the Department of
Education and not the Board of
Higher education, witnesses
agreed.
The witnesses included educa
tors and school board members
nd delegations from Astoria and
Bend.
There are three bills before Hie
legislature, all appropriating mon
ey for community colleges. One
would put the program tinder the
higher board, another under local
school hoards and the third would
not spell this out.

churches of their choice.
Encouraging girls to attend their
church or svnueogue is nart of
Camp Fire activity, according to
Mrs. Arch Colbrunn. Many church
es sponsor Camp Fire or Blue Bird
groups and the first of the ideals
expressed in the Law of the Camp
Fire Girls is "Worship God."
In some Roseburg churches,
seats have been reserved for
Camp Fire Girls and Blue Birds
who have indicated that Ihey wish
to attend services in a boily. In
other churches, the girls will ac
company their parents.
Camp Fire Girls in church day
is part of the Birthday Week cele
brations marking the finale of the
