Came Commission Additional Wild Plants northern Wallowa county was the planting site for the third release of wild Mcrriam's turkey in Ore gon during the past several weeks. Seven of these great game birds were liberated March 7 on the low er Cummings tract within the Troy game management area by Bob Mace, chief of the game commis sion's upland game bird section, assisted by Harlan Scott, game biologist in the Troy district. The wild turkeys were trapped near Albuquerque by the New Mex ico Department of Fish and Game and were shipped by airline to Boise, Idaho. Personnel of the Ida ho Game Department then trans ferred the birds by truck to Hunt ington where they were met by Oregon game men who trucked the birds to the Wallowa release site. Negotiations with several south western states have been under way for a year or more to obtain the wild turkey for trial plants in Oregon and consummated during the past month when Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico all made successful trapping attempts. Colorado was the first to ac knowledge and shipped 20 Mcr riam's turkeys by air freight which were released by the game com- mission in the White River coun try west of Tygh Valley. Arizona followed immediately with 51 birds which were trucked from Flagstaff to two Oregon release points. Thir teen of the big game birds were released near Green Ridge in" the Metolius river area and the re mainder released near the first planting at White River. All birds released were captured in the wild. Experience indicates that wild stocks retain their wild instincts, remain alert, and have the best chance of adjusting to their new surroundings. The game commission feels the Mcrriam's turkey, native to the southwest, has the best chance for survival since its native range is similar with eastern Oregon conditions. Residents in the Troy area arc requested not to feed the birds if they should chance to wander near farm areas since this may make The Eden bench country in .the birds less. wary. Schoning, Oregon Fih Commission director announc ed today. An improved rale of fingerling survival, an excellent growth rale, and the prime physical condition of the yearling silvers produced at Millicoma point up the impor tance of modern pond rearing tech niques in fishery restoration. Production this year at the Milli coma facility, developed coopera tively by the Fish Commission and the Weyerhaeuser Company, total ed nearly eighty thousand yearling silver salmon, representing an ex cellent survival rate of about 80 per cent of the fingerlings placed in the pond last July. The fish were fin-clipped for future identifi cation and released into the Milli coma River. The Millicoma is part of the Coos River system, the confluence of the two streams being about six miles above the Coos River's mouth on Coos Bay. By building up Millicoma River salmon runs, it is believed that sufficient eggs can be obtained from a proposed Millicoma rack to provide ade quate numbers of pond-reared fish In stock both the Millicoma as well as the South Coos River. I'nder such circumstances it would be possible to remove the Commission's rack from the South Coos, allowing natural spawning to take place in the limited suit able spawning area above the rack site, thus supplementing the pro- (N) vs. Boston at San Chica Diego Ios Angeles (A) vs. Chicago (N) (B squad) at Mesa New York vs. Baltimore at Mi ami Kansas City vs. Chicago (A) at Sarasota Detroit vs. Washington at Pom pano Beaoh S. During 1957, splash dams on the South Cons above the rack were removed by Menasha Wooden Ware Corporation. The company under took this stream clearance project not only to give anadromous fish access to upstream spawning areas but also to halt the scouring of stream bed spawning gravels by splashing operations. Plans for the current season call for placing a half million young silvers into the rearing pond, the most ambitious rearing project yet undertaken at this impoundment. This fall will see the return of mature fish from the first year's operation plus jacks from this year's release. There were en couraging returns last fall of jacks from the first brood reared in Mil licoma Pond. In addition to increasing the numbers of fish to be reared at tho Coos County pond this season, the Commission plans to establish a modern incubation station in the vicinity. Hero eggs taken from adult silvers returning to Millicoma Pond will be handled to provide successive crops of young fish for stocking the impoundment. This plan provides for the mo;t productive use of the available fish and facilities. The Oregon Fish Commission is fully aware of the need to rebuild the coastal salmon runs, Schoning emphasized. The Millicoma devel opment is part of the overall plan. Another step that has been taken in this direction includes the re lease of silver salmon in the Hall Schuttpclz Lakes section of north ern Coos County's Tenmilc Lakes chain. Research has shown this lake system possesses a high po tential, presently unused, for nat ural rearing of silver salmon fry to yearling size at no additional cost. Restoration of spawning areas through the removal of log jams from debris-choked coastal streams and a comprehensive program of research involving the use of coast al lakes as natural rearing waters are among other Fish Commission activities directed toward the res toration of salmon production in Oregon's coastal waters.
