Richard Roe sued the Doe Insur
ance Company on a mercantile rob
bery and safe burglary policy. One
of the defenses advanced by the
Doe Insurance Company was that
the robbery was committed as a
result of collusion with the corpor
ate officer and stockholder and
that the loss was the result of a
"faked inside job." ln order to sub
stantiate this defense. The Doe
Company offered the testimony of
an experienced expert burglar to
the effect that neither the witness
nor anv other so experienced would
eo about the matter as Richard
Roe's evidence showed; but would
have done it in a more skilled,
polished and adroit manner.

they have on the price we receive
for live iambs. Well, it appears
that at least some relief from this
is coming up in the future, ln the
latest issue of the National Wool
Growers magazine, two comments
were made about lamb imports
which should be of interest to most
sheep men in Douglas County.
IN REGARD to Australian live
lamb shipments, it reported there
are no shipments currently under
way Irom Australia to the United
States and that no export permit
has been applied for. It is report
ed that the S. S. Delphino, which
has carried live lambs from Aus
tralia to San Francisco and Sacra
mento, is docked in Sydney Har
bor and probably will be used to
haul wethers to the Persian Gulf
or to Egypt; and at the present
time it isn t felt likely that any
Australian lambs will be coming
to the United States, at least dur
ing the next five months.
Word on New Zealand shipments
of lamb also was discussed in this
issue. It was indicated that word
has been received from the New
Zealand Meat Producers Board
that a resolution was passed stat
ing that no substantial market for
New Zealand lambs existed in
Canada, New Foundland or the
United States, and that after Jan
1, 1961, no New Zealand lambs
shall be exported from New Zea
land to North America except by
or through the Meat Export De
velopment to. The only purpose
of the Meat Export Development
Lo. in New Zealand is to promote
trade in the national interest. So,
it appears there may not be any
great amoung of lambs shipped in
tins year,
WE PROBABLY still will have
to compete with some of the Aus
tralian lambs, but certainly with
the lower prices we are receiving
in this country and the higher
prices that are being charged in
Australia and New Zealand, it ap
pears likely that the import will
slow down
Part of the difficulty that we
had had, of course, in selling our
lamb has been a larger U.S. pro
duction, ln 1951, the United Slates
produced about 469 million pounds
of lamb and yearling meat; where
in i960, it is estimated that
the United States will produce
some 684 million pounds of meat.
or almost a 45 per cent increase
in the pounds of lamb and year
ling produced. This, of course,
would have a tremendous effect on
the market.
PERSONALLY, I feel Douclas
County can compete with anyplace
else in the United States in pro
ducing lamb, both from the stand
point of quality and from the
standpoint of cost of production.
Certainly by improving our opera
tions ana working on efficiency.
we can stay in business a long
time after the ranee industry has
vanished. Mostly, it is a matter of
more efficiency which means im
proved pasture, better manage
ment, better control of internal
parasites disease and a better job
of marketing. All these things put
together and done well can keep
Douglas County one of the leading
sneep producing counties in t n e
United States.

Employers Avoid
By JERRY BENNETT
Nawipaptr Enterprise Ann.
WASHINGTON (NEA) What
ever success President Kennedy
has in ehminaing widespread un
employment probably will have
few lasting benefits for more than
a million jobless workers over 4(1.
They are the victims of age dis
crimination by employers, a prob
lem that economy priming meas
ures alone can't solve.
So sav experts of the Labor De
partment's Bureau of Employment
Security who are growing increas
ingly alarmed about company hir
ing policies which draw the line
at the relatively early age of 40.
Last year the number of 4u-plus
workers who couldn't get a job to
taled about one million. Today, at
the height of the business slump
it's believed to be much higher
Says Robert C. Goodwin, director
of the Federal Bureau of tmploy
ment Security:
"Age bias in hiring has serious
consequences not only for the in
dividual worker and employer but
for the community and nation a:
well. The economic and psychologi
cal damage to thousands of work
ers over 40 denied an opportunity
to work is obvious to most.
"Less obvious is the fact that
such restrictions result in the cre
ation of artificial manpower short
ages and prevent full utilization of
our nations most valuable re
source its manpower.
Labor Department expert spre

economy will be turning out $730
billion worth of goods and services.
At least 13.5 million more workers
than are ' now available will be
needed to maintain this economy.

Cigarette Firm Will Drop
Controversial TV Program
NEW YORK (AP)-The Liggett
& Myers Tobacco Co. announced
here that it will drop sponsorship
of "The Untouchables," a tele
vision show that has aroused the
ire of persons of Italian descent.
The company also said it was
dropping "Asphalt Jungle" and
"Adventures in Paradise."
It said it is not continuing this
fall, under its renewal agreement,
participating sponsorship with the
American Broadcasting Co. tele
vision network in the three pro
grams. The reason given by the com
pany was that the programs have
been rescheduled by ABC at 10 to
11 p.m. rather than 9:30 to 10:30
p.m.

6.4 million of these additional work
ers will be younger than 25. About
1.6 million will be in tneir late
20s and 30s. The remaining 5.5
million must come from the 40-plus
age group. So far, however, there
has been no sign that most busi
nessmen are ready to eliminate
hiring policy age restrictions. :
Labor Department studies reveal
that older workers are the victims
of a strange paradox. As long as
they are employed, they are re
garded as important business as
sets. They are labeled "experienc
ed, steady, clear thinking, loyal
and dependable." People in many
executive positions are regarded
as "young" even when they reach
their middle 40s.
But if a man loses a job after
age 40, his image changes, labor
experts say. Employers tag him
as "difficult to train, inflexible, un-:
dependable, an insurance risk and
a costly drain on company retire
ment programs."
These ideas hold even though the
job applicant is out of work through
no fault of his own. j
Tha Labor Department is cur
rently engaged in a nationwide in
formation campaign to acquaint
employers with the benefits of hir-i
ing older workers. Similar cam
paigns are being conducted by i
state and civic organizations. The'
U. S. Employment Service, with
its network of state bureaus, is
making an all out effort to place
older workers in available jobs.
Some government officials, how
ever, believe that education pro
grams alone won't solve the prob
lem. One Labor Department offi
cial predicts the eventual enact-:

Rep. Alfred Santangelo, D-N.Y
state president of the Federation
of Italian-American Democratic
Organizations, had said Sunday
that Americans of Italian extrac
tion would be urged to boycott
four brands of cigarettes produced
by Liggett & Myers.
An ABC studio was picketed
last Thursday by a group of 250
persons including Anthony (Tough
Tony) Anastasia, Brooklyn long
shore leader and brother of- mur
dered mobster Albert Anastasia.
The longshoremen threatened to
stop handling Liggett & Myers
products in protest against the use
of Italian names on "The Untouch
ables." Albert Anastasia, known as the
"executioner" for Murder, Inc.,
the old Brooklyn murder for-pay
gang, was shot to death in 1957
while getting a haircut in a hotel.
Liggett & Myers produces Ches
terfield, Oasis, L. & M. filter and
Duke cigarettes.
ln Rome, an informal survey in
dicated Liggett & Myers ciga
rettes were selling normally in
both state controlled cigarette
stores and on street corner black
markets despite Italian-American
objections to the show.
