THOMAS ! AP Movie-TV Writer HOLLYWOOD (AP) A self -professed failure as an actor, John Cassavetes is now being bailed as a leader of Hollywood's new wave. Some of us have been scanning the horizon for signs of a new wave that would bring Hollywood the same vitality that a crew of young creators has brought to the trench film industry. Until re cently, the signs have been scant. Now comes Cassavettes to lend hope. Because of him, Edmond O Brien and some other fresh tal ents, Paramount Studios may be the site of Hollywood s artistic re vival. Then again, the whole thing could fizzle out, but let's not take a dim view. Shadows' Creator s Followers of the cinema art rec ognize Cassavetes as creator of an amazing film called "Shad ows. It will star Bobby Darin and Stella Stevens with many of the "Shadows" performers, most of whom studied in - Cassavetes' workshop for actors. How did Cassavetes get into the production side? ' "Because I failed as an actor,' he said bluntly. - This seemed hard to believe. He enjoyed a good reputation in TV and films. Studio Disaster His one experience with the big studios was disastrous. He was put under contract to MGM and assigned to manage Robert Tavlor in "Saddle the Wind." The picture turned out well the first time, Cassavetes thought. But then the producer decided it wasn t com mercial. The director was fired and two-thirds of the film was reshot. "The result was lousy." Cassa vetes said. "Later, the producer called me up and wanted me to come to dinner. I said I didn't want to because I thought he was an idiot. The next day, I was re leased from my contract. "The problems which have arisen in the Oregon Legislature over the Boardman lease to Boe ing result not from any hostility or opposition to the hoped-for Boeing development, but rather from a lack of first hand infor mation as to Boeing's plans," House Speaker Robert Duncan and Senate President Harry Boi vin said in a release. The legislative delegation will be from the Ways and Means Committee, which now has before it a proposal to appropriate $900,- 000 for purchase of the land and the subsequent lease to Boeing. There have been reports that Boeing would turn the site into an industrial complex.
