All this fails to turn the head of Previn, whose honor-laden ca reer began when he wrote his first film music at 17. Now 31 and a veteran of 37 movie scores, he takes a realistic view of his Os car chances. "I don't think I'll win this year," he remarked. "There are too many other contenders that have gotten more notice." Even without winning the final prize, Previn's achievement is re markable. Record-hunters can find nothing to equal his feat of getting three nominations in three categories. They were: "Bells Are Ringing" for best score of a musical film; "Elmer Gantry" for best score of a dramatic film: and "Faraway Part of Town" from "Pepe" as best song. Mrs. Previn, Dory Langdon, wrote the lyrics. Previn has been trying to coun sel his wife not to expect victory. Even so, she admitted sleepless nights while composing accept ance speeches.' "That hapepned to me the first four years I was nominated," Previn sighed. "1 was -already with a lovely speech, but 1 never won." i "On the fifth year, I didn't think about it. I was in the pit when my name was announced, and I didn't know what to do." Previn is a switch-hitter who is I equally adept in jazz or symphon ! ics. Oregon's Water Supply Outlook Poor Despite Recent Heavy Rain By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Oregon's water supply outlook for the spring and summer re mains poor. The heavy February rains did little to improve it and in some areas the prospect is even less cheerful than a month' ago. This was reported today by W., T. Frost, snow - survey supervisor for the Department 01 Agricul ture's Soil Conservation Service. The problem is lack of water in mountain snows, coupled with a poor carry-over in reservoirs from last year's dry season. , The water content in the stale's mountain snowpaek is only 50 per cent of the 1943-57 average, Frost said.- This is the poorest since 1934, he said. In 1959 it was 52 per cent. The Wullowa region has the best snowpaek at 74 per cent ot aver age while the Willamette water shed is low at 3b ner cent. This suRgests. Frost said, that the peak accumulation will reach only about two-thirds of normal since March snows generally add only about 14 per cent. Water now stored in 22 import ant irrigation reservoirs is 106 per cent of the total at this time a year ago, but is only 75 per cent of the 1943-57 average. Most critical streamflow condi tions are expected on streams flowing inlo the Ochoco, Drew, Owhyee, McKay, Hyatt, Clear Lake and Gerber Reservoirs, along with Crooked and Silvies rivers. All these are expected to fall below 50 per cent ot average.
