Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Hemphill
of Palm Springs, Calif., are visit
ing here for a few days with the
latter's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ed
Miller, on W. Foothill Drive. They
are en route home from a business
trip to Seattle and Vancouver, B.C.
Mrs. Hemphill is the former Shir
ley Miller of this city.
Mr. and Mrs. Dale Hedtrson
and daughters 11 and 7. and son,
9, are newcomers here from Klam
ath Falls and are residing at the
Green Meadow Trailer Court, just
south of Roseburg on the Dillard
Highway. Hederson is a salesman
for Metropolitan Life Insurance
Co.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert H. O'Neil
and daughter, Peggy, attended the
basketball game in Springfield
over the weekend. The O'Neils'
son, Bruce, played on the varsity
team. While in Eugene they visit
ed their son and daughter-in-law,
Mr. and Mrs. Jim O'Neil, and son,
Michael. They were accompanied
by Eric Young, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Robert Young.
Mrs. A. B. Cacy has returned to
her home in the Kohlhagen apart
ments, following six weeks in Sun
City, Ariz., visiting her brother and
sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. E. A.
Britton, and a stop over en route
south and again coming home to
visit in Sacramento, Calif., at the
home of her son, Harold Cacy, and
family. The Brittons formerly re
sided in Roseburg. They won the
home in Sun City for Britton hav
ing won the contest naming of the
city.

Miss Alice Hamilton, sophomort
at Willamette University, has been

Gamma Sorority. She is the daugh
ter of Airs. Byron Alcrarland.
Mr. and Mrs. Al H. May have
returned to their home on Fisher
Road, following a trip to Sacra
mento. Calif., to visit their son,,
Jerry, and then going to San Fran
cisco to enjoy a vacation. They
also enjoyed a stay in Monterey
and report excellent weather while
they were away. They returned
home via the coast route.
Mr. and Mrs. Philip Walker of
Roseburg have received word of
the birth of a son, Walter Hand, to
the Rev. and Mrs. Philip Walker
of Madison, N. J. The 9 pound 6
ounce baby joins two sisters. The
Rev. Jlr. walker will be graduated
from Drew University this spring
and expects to be assigned to a
pastorate in Oregon. He is a mem
ber of the Oregon Methodist Con
ference. He lived with his parents
in Lookingglass valley as a Doy in
the house now owned and occu
pied by Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Swift.
Mrs. Paul H. Helweg of Rose
burg and her sister, Airs. Blossom
Maxwell, ot Minneapolis, Alinn, are
leaving Honolulu today for Los
Angeles, where they will visit tne
latter's son, Richard Maxwell, dean
of law at the University of Calif.,
following two weeks vacationing
in the islands. On account of the
plane strike earlier, they left Van
couver, B. C. for Honolulu in
stead of from Portland as pre
viously planned. Mrs. Helweg will
visit her sister-in-law, Jrs. uutn
Roberts, in Turlaock, Calif., be
fore returning here. They report
they especially enjoyed their va
cation in the Hawaiian Islands
While in Honolulu they stayed at
the Reef Hotel on Waikikt Beach
Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Campbell
are back at their home on SE
Main St. in Roseburg, following a
trip to San Francisco, where the
former was invilea to me invita
tional conference of the Moderators
of the United Presbyterian Church
of the United States of America.
Between two and three hundred
moderators from t he Western
states attended. Following the con
ference Campbell was invited to at
tend the National meeting of the
School Administrators, held sever
al days in San Francisco. While in
San Francisco they enjoyed a visit
with relatives and with Mrs. Max
Hamm, who now resides in Berke
ley, and who went to San Francisco
to visit with them. Her late hus
band was superintendent of schools
here jn the early 1920's. From San
Francisco the Campbells went to
Carmichael, Calif., to visit their
son and daughter-in-law, Air. and
Mrs. W. Al. Campbell Jr.,' and ac
companied them to Yreka, Calif,
to see their grandson, William
Campbell III, play in the invita
tional basketball game. Bill 111 is
president of the junior class of La
Sierra High School and a member
of the basketball team. While in
Carmichael Mrs. Campbell enjoy
ed a visit with Mr. and Mrs. Earl
Bleile, formerly of this city. In
Medford. they stopoed over for a
visit with their son-in-law an d
daughter. Mr. and Mrs. Patrick
Kilby, and family. The Kilbys' eld
est son. Patrick, was inducted into
the Torch Society of the National
Honor Society while they were
there.

A drive has developed in the State
Legislature to put a damper on
teacher-led student demonstrations
such as those? against the House
Committee on un-American Activ
ities. Assemblyman Louis Francis, a
Sau Mateo Republican, said today
he will introduce legislation Mon
day to prohibit teachers from in
doctrinating public school students
in any doctrine that preaches over
throw of government.
His measure also would bar
teachers from engaging in parti
san political activities on campus
es. He would prohibit teachers
from involving students in such ac
tivities. Francis claims some teachers
have utilized their positions to or

course in special surgery at lit.
Zion Hospital in San Francisco and
Dr. Silas Fox spent three days at
the University of Oregon Medical
School in Portland taking a post
