Soviets Claim First In Creation Of Jazz MOSCOW (AP)-A Soviet ex pert on music says New Orleans Jazz men may have been stomp in? tuneful echoes from Odessa when they created the Dixieland beat. Leonid Osipovich Vtyosov's ar ticle in the latest issue of "Soviet Culture" not only gives commu nism's blessing to jazz as good honest music, but also suEgests that the Russians might have in vented the way-out stuff. Jazz has been regarded as just a bad noise here, as the sound of capitalistic decadence. Vtyo sov, .however, wrote that jazz "isn't: a synonym of imperialism and the saxophone wasn't born of colonialism." ' - He I said that improvisation is the cornerstone of jazz. "Jazz music has existed for a long time and New Orleans style was not the discoverer but oiilv a stage in its development,1' Ulyosov commented. "In Odessa long ago, musicians always improvised at weddings. This gives me grounds to say that so-called Dixieland existed in Odessa before New Orleans." lltyosov, 65, is learned in opera and symphonies as well as in jazz. SJa Sprig Hi Pop . . .
