Dominating the mat action at Glide during the District l-A-2 wrestling tournament the Bulldogs placed 10 boys in the 26 from the district that will go to the state tournament. The Bulldogs racked up a team total of 153 points, witn tne nosi wildcats unisning second with 93 points. Myrtle creeK s vikings came in third with 81 points, followed bv the Glendale Pirates with 79 points. Other scores included Doug las wnn w points, uaKiana witn CO points and Riddle with 15 points. Following Sutherlin, the Wild cats, the Vikings and the Douglas Trojans each qualified four mat men for the state tournament. Glendale and Oakland will send two boys to state, while Riddle was unable to place any of its wrestlers. Fiva Chamos Set Sutherlin will be led in its quest for the state crown by live dis trict champs. The title winners for the Bulldogs were Doug Shorcy at 98 pounds, Bud Brannon at 115 pounds, jerry strong at its pounds, Wayne Fagin at 130 pounds and Rov Feeler at 141 pounds. Sec ond place winners for the Bulldogs included Jake lira no at lis pounds Ron Goertzen at 123 pounds, Lyle Linton at 141 pounds, .Larry Long- brake at 157 pounds and Gerald Jugate at lai pounds. Glide won three district crowns with Bruce Manske taking the 136- pound title, Al Radcliffe winning at 168 pounds and Andy Gibbens dominating the heavyweight class. Dick Sherriff finished second to Roy Peeler in the 141-pound action, losing a referees decision to the champ in overtime. Heading the list of state con tenders for the Myrtle Creek squad is defending state champ Oordy Lowell. Lowell won the 157-pound district title on a referee's deci sion in overtime over Longbrakc of Sutherlin. Bill James took the 191-pound district title for the Viks, while Ray Osborne at 106 pounds and Pat Hughes at 136 pounds fin ished in the No. 8 positions. Thomas Wins The lone district champ for the Douglas Trojan matmen is Mike Thomas at 148 pounds. Other Tro jans qualifying for the state meet were Mickey McClendon at 130 pounds, Larry Smith at 168 pounds and Herman McDowell at 191 pounds. Glendale will send Philip Mc Dowell to Corvallis to compete in the 98-pound competition and Fred Fatheringham will wrestle in the heavyweight bracket. McDowell both finished second in their weight. Oakland's Oakers . boast two wrestlers going to the state meet, and both won the championship in their respective weights. John The nis downed ail comers in me pro pound competition at Glide, while Wayne Gcrmond dominated the 178-pound action. In the District l-A-2 wrestling tournament the individual champ ions were determined in the finals, and the number two man was the winner of the bouts which pitted the losers in the finals against the winners in the consolation rounds. Jayvees Avenge Loss With Upset Roscbure's Junior Varsity cag- ers avenged an earlier loss to the Marshfield Junior Varsity by edg ing the visitors, 50-47, Saturday night. The winners led throughout the first three quarters of the game, only to see the Pirate Jayvees knot the score by the end of the third period. In the final quarter the teams shifted the lead back and forth before guard Spike Moore dumped in a pair of free throws in the closing seconds to give the Indians a safe lead. Bruce O'Neil was the leading scorer for the winners with 13 points. Jim Wassom followed with 12 noints and Moore had a game total of 10. Don Elliott led Marsh- field with 27 counters. Hornets Reach Hoop Final In District 4-B Tournament Elkton's Elks came within three points of pulling their second up set over the Powers Cruisers Sat urday in District 4-B Tournament action at Sutherlin. However, the Cruisers rallied in the second half to edge the Elks, 43-40. They now go into the tourney finals against the Camas valley Hornets. Camas Valley was also forced to come from behind to down the Yon- calla Eagles, 53-51, in Saturday s action. The other tournament game was won by the D ay s Creek Wolves as they advanced into the consolation finals against the Can yonville Bible Academy Pilots. The next round of District 4-B basketball tournament action is scheduled for March 3 at Sutherlin. Opening the tournev play will be the consolation finals at 6:30 p.m. between the Wolves and the Pilots. At 7:45 the Elks will clash with the Eagles for third place, with the championship game between Powers and Camas Valley being played at 9. If Camas Valley wins, a second game between the two top teams will be played March 4 at 7:30 p.m. Cruisers 43, Elks 40 Playing brilliant defensive ball the Elks held the Cruisers to a mere 15 counters in the first half as they took a 10-point lead al halftime. They continued to lead until 1:34 before the final buzzer when Rich Calbo and Ainslic Krans picked up two-pointers for the Cruiser victory. In the second half rally the Cruis ers reversed the story on the Elks. Elkton managed to pick up only 15 points in the half, while the Cruisers totaled 13 and 15 points in the third and fourth quarters. Tom Soliem set the pace for the Elks collecting 17 points on 6 field goals and five for eight from the charity marker. Calbo and Krans led the Cruisers with 12-point to tals. Calbo working from a guard spot kept the Cruisers in the game with six straight points in the final stanza as the winners overtook the Elks. Kiser swished 11 field goals and bucketed 10 for 18 from the foul line as he racked up a 32-point total. In two games in the tourney Kiser has a total of 62 points. He leads the scorers. Ron Revclle was the big gun for the Eagles with 18 counters, while "Red" Wiley col lected 14 points. Yoncalla took the lead at the opening of the second quarter and ' C. held it until the closing minutes o the contest. With 2:09 left to play, Kiser knotted the count with a field goal and then put the Hornets out in front with another two-pointer seconds later. The Ea gles had two chances to go ahead on fast breaks, but missed both shots along with a last second field goal attempt which was in and out. After battling to a 4-3 lead at the first break, the Wolves ex ploded for 18 points in the second quarter to lead 22-14 at halftime. In the third period Days Creek took a 10-3 advantage and con tinued to build up the lead. Com ing back in the final stanza the Tigers cut the lead by four points, but rallied too late to overtake the front running Wolves Bud Olsen was the sparkplug In the Days Creek offense netting 20 points against the Tigers, ircd Grunst and Loren Powell topped mo scoring for the Tigers with 11 and 10 points respectively. Roseburg's team total was 101, outdistancing the nearest rival by 11 points. Marshfield's Pirates fin ished second with 90 points, while South Eugene's Axemen came in third with a total of 84 points. Fol lowing the three leaders was North Bend with 75 points and North Eu gene with 73 points. , All seven teams competing will he represented at the state tourna ment scheduled for March 3-4 at Corvallis. Roseburg and North Eu gene each led the qualifiers with five bovs advancing to the state compcti'tion. Marshfield and North Bend will each send four wrestlers to the state, while South Eugene and Springfield will have three representatives at Corvallis. Wil lamette had two grapplers qualify for the state tourney. Richman Leads Indians Leading the Indians into the fi nals was Ken Richman at 98 pounds. Ken scored pins in his first two tournament bouts and then won a 3 0 decision over Ron Judv of Marshfield in the semi finals. In the finals the speedy In dian flyweight outpointed Randy Thwing of North Eugene, 7-0. to win the district 98-pound champion ship. Thwing will also go to the state tournament. G. W. Marical won the district 123-pound title winning four match es in the tournament. Marical pin ned his first two opponents and then took a lopsided 10-5 decision cision over Jim Murphy of South Eugene. Pinard will make the trip to Corvallis as the No. 2 man in the district 130-pound competition after losing a 3-2 overtime decision to Jones. Cihill Wins Wrestling at 136 pounds, Jim Ca hill took the district title for the Indians. Cahill registered a pin in his first match and then added two decisions to reach the finals. In the finals Cahill outpointed Lar ry Piquctte of Springfield, 8-6, in overtime. Doug John will represent the Tribe in the 191-pound action at Corvallis after winning three straight bouts to take the district crown. John opened action with a decision and then outpointed Dick North of North Bend, 6-4. in the semi finals. John scored the lone pin picked up by the Indians in the finals as he defeated Wayne Brines of North Bend in 1:43 of the first period. North Eugene wilt hve Gary Tunistra, wrestling in the Stale tourney as its only district champ. Tunistra competes at 178 pounds. Second place winners for the High landers include Thwing at 98 pounds, Doug Smith at 115 pounds, Wayne Persons at 157 pounds and Tom King at 168 pounds. Marshfield will have Bill Jones at 130 pounds and Howard Patnode at 148 pounds wrestling as district champs.
