HAY CHUTE A far cry from the modern methods of
farming but still very ingenious is this chute and barn built
in the early 1900s by Jay and Josh Wright on their horrne
stead on. Devil's Knob Road northeost of Drew. Hay raised
on what was known as the summit hayfield was placed on
the chute behind a dam of boards a few feet from the
upper end. When the boards were "removed, the weight
carried the hay down to the born toboggan-style.- (Picture

Dazzling Show Staged
By Hawaiian Volcano
HONOLULU (AP) Halemau
mau fire pit ii) the mighty Kil
auea volcano ceased erupting Fri
day after spewing forth a chain
of fiery lava fountains up to 100
feet high for eight hours.
The dazzling display ended as
abruptly as it began. But volca
nologists were not yet writing it
off.
No one was hmt and no dam
age was reported during the short
lived eruption in the fire pit site
of former awesome eruptions on
southernmost Hawaii Island.
The eruption, Kilauea's 20th
since 1918, was confined to the
fire pit and did not pose any
threat to the sparsely populated
neighboring area in Hawaii Na
tional Park. " '
Kilauea volcano, about 4.000
feet above sea level on the slopes
of Mauna Loa, is one of the larg
est active volcanos today. Its last
outburst was Feb. 19, 1960, when
it wiped out small kapoho village
and caused about $5 million dam
age. 1
