Power Firms
Planning Vast
Electrical Lines
PORTLAND (AP) Two power
companies have announced plans
for construction of vast transmis
sion lines that will carry power
from two new dams, Wanapum
and Priest Kapids, on the Colum
bia River in Eastern Washington.
One ot the lines will be built over
the Cascades.
"Total cost of the transmission
program will be approximately
$25 million," the two firms, Pa
cific Power and Light Co. and
Portland General Electric Co.,
said in a news release.
When the dams are completed,
the two companies will get more
than one million kilowatts from
them. To carry that power, PGE
and PP&L will coordinate con
struction of new 230,000-volt lines.
Surveys and design work will
begin at once, with construction
expected to start early in 1962
and be finished by summer of
1963.
PP&L said I 230,000-volt line
carrying power from Priest Rap
ids into its Yakima County system
will he doubled in capacity, and
linked to the Wanapum project.
It will be extended to west of
Yakima and converge with PGE's
new line from Wanapum.
The two firms then will share
towers across 67 miles of the Cas
cades. "The two 230,000-volt circuits
will be hung on opposite sides of
the steel towers carrying the lines
across the mountains to the vicin
ity of PP&L's Yale and S.ft
hvdroelectric projects on the Up.

Britain May Ask
Red China Seat
LONDON (AP) - Britain will
try to convince the Kennedy ad
ministration that world disarma
ment can be advanced if Commu
nist China is sealed in the United
Nations, it was learned authorita
tively. This will form a major RriUsh
argument when Prime Minilsr
Harold Macmillan and Foreign
Secretary Lord Home meet in
Washington curly in April with
President Kennedy and Secretary
of State Dean Husk.
The Soviet attitude when three
power nuclear test ban talks re
open in Clcncva March 21 is of
prime importance. If the Soviets
use delaying ladies there, the
whole British thesis would seem
to be undermined.
