The supper will Finds New Talent For Plays ' By WILLIAM GLOVER AP Oram. Writer NEW YORK Lucille Lortel has favorite expression: "Mavbe something wonderful is going to happen!" That plus a tireless talent for tackling obstacles keeps Miss Lortel up in tne vanguard or ineai rical reform. Whatever is offbeat, new and unusual lures her like a lamp does the moth. Her thespic record qualifies this actress - turned producer as the most persistent and influential sponsor of experiment in this show ,business capital. , ' Wave Pusher Whenever any "new wave" ven ture comes along, the odds are . nn I,ortel involvement, -lonesco, Genet, Betti, Dos Passos, O'Casey are among authors she has. helped to Gotham hearing. Among performers, she gave in itial opportunity to Geoffrey Hold er, the Irish Player. Siobhan Mc Kenna got a chance to do "Ham let" for her. Other established players who tested untried talents include Eva Marie Saint, Jo Sulli van, Eileen Heckart. Desperate Authors "My biggest satisfaction is giv ing opportunity to performers, di rectors and most of all to authors," she says. "Writers are the most frustrated of all they come to me in desperation." Miss Lortel began her unortho dox staging 14 years ago at the White Barn theater in Westport, Conn- where invitation audiences examine shows on summer week ends. Currently she is producing the fifth season of matinee per formances on behalf of the Ameri can National Theatre and Acad emy at another theater she owns, the de Lys in Greenwich Village. Wedding Present Miss Lortel ot Into production following her marriage to Louis Schweitzer, well-to-do business ex . ecutive. Her atage career included appearances with Helen Hayes in "Caesar and Cleopatra," and Ju dith Anderson in "The Dove" and with Florence Heed in "The Shang hai Gesture." As a 2.1rd wedding anniversary present, Schweitzer bought her the de Lvs weaier in ism lor experi mentation but the playhouse ever since has been regularly oc cupied by her first venture, "The Threepenny Opera." Fur Seal Gets Spr ing Haircut Fur seal got a butch haircut for ' spring. The result is lakoda, a sheer, lightweight fur introduced recent ly by the fur seal industry to com pete with cloth coats in mild weather, too. Jealous of the sllkiness and rlrapability of some fabrics spring wraps are made of, pelt-makers sheered the Alaskan seal to give it a flat, silky and golden irridescent appearance. Since the new fur has reached the market, designers have fash ioned it into jackets, caps and three quarter length coats. Crisply tailored shirtmaker jack eta and coats are a fur design innovation which is not usually pos sible with other unshearcd animal pelts. Just as if It were fabric, the new lakoda fur is often trimmed i with mink ranch or mutation, un- aheared aeal, blue fox or Persian Lamb dyed brown or black. The shearing trick keeps the fur out of the storage vaulta in spring, an uievuaDuiiy tor neavier peiu. Smorgasbord Set For Tomorrow tmtri rf 111 fttcak.
