Southern California
Moves Step Closer
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Southern California, on the
strength of its victory at Stanford
last Friday and UCLA's subse
quent loss to Stanford Saturday,
moved a big step closer to its
first Big Five basketball cham
pionship over the weekend.
UCLA, rated the best shot at the
high-flying USC Trojans, came a
cropper at Stanford, 79-65, as 6-8
John , Windsor dumped 30 points
for the winning Indians.
In other Saturday night action,
Washington made it two in a row
over California after eight straight
defeats dating from 1957, by edg
ing the Bears, 59-58. at Washington
in overtime.
The Huskies had beaten Cal 70
50 Friday night while Southern

Portland Bucks
Battle To Tie
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
The Portland Buckaroos thought
they were dreaming Sunday when
they encountered Harry Lumley
the evening after he had had a
nightmare.
The apple-checked goalie who
spent the better part of a decade
jumping from Detroit, Toronto,
Chicago and Boston of the Na
tional Hockey League put on a
sensational performance as he
kicked out 44 shots and held the
second-place Buckaroos to one
goal in a Western Hockey League
game.
His Winnipeg Warrior team
mates managed to match the
counter and come out with a 1-1
overtime tie.
Lumley's great goaltending
helped to make up for Saturday
night when the Seattle Totems
made him look ridiculous while
walloping the Warriors 11-1.
In other action Saturday, league
leading Calgary whipped Victoria
6-4 and Vancouver maintained a
slim margin over the fourth-place
Totems with a 2-1 victory over
Spokane.
Sunday's tie enabled Winnipeg
to move into seventh place, one
point ahead of the Edmonton Fly
ers, who have six games in hand.
Portland, which attracted 9,451
fans for Sunday night's game, is
two points behind league-leading
Calgary with two games in hand.
