Berserk Husband Kills Self In 2-Hour Battle MILFORD, Mass. (AP) A man barricaded himself m the apart ment of his estranged wife early today and for two hours held off police and firemen with blasts from a shotgun before taking bis own life. . Police said Joseph M. Giudin sky, 40, killed himself by firing a shot into his head just as police tossed tear gas into the apart ment in which he had locked him self. Just before (he fatal shot, Po lice Chief William F. Fitzpatrick donned a ' bullet-proof vest, en tered the building and fired a tear gas bomb near the apartment door. Fitzpatrick said Giudinsky had burst into the apartment of his estranged wife and son, Joseph, 13, and threatened them with his shotgun. , The woman fled to the apart ment below hers and called police. Birnkrant Found His ;Dream Isle' But Not Many Are That Fortunate By BOB THOMAS AP Movlo-TV Writer PAPEETE, Tahiti (AP) Every American man dreams about go ing to Tahiti some day. Few ever do it. Take Leonard D. Birnkrant, known as Lee. A few months ago, he was an orthodontist in North Hollywood, Calif. He drove a Porsche and earned $1,200 a month. . Then one day he looked in the last little mouth and tightened his last set of braces. "I'm going to Tahiti for four weeks," he told the other dentist in the office. "All right," was the answer, "the vacation will do you good." Lee was 27, tail, good-looking, born in Columbus, Ohio, gradu ated from USC Dental School, unwed. He had worked or studied i all his life. Ever since he could, remember, his life was planned for him. He wanted to go some place where each day might hold surprises for him. Like every American man, he had dreamed of Tahiti. He bought the round-trip fare (which the French government requires) and took $500. His first reaction was wonder ment, the normal tourist reaction to the lushness of the scenery and the prettiness of the girls. After two weeks, he. felt depressed. It was too foreign, too strange to his American tastes. But then a change started to come oyer him. The people began to' accept him. He began to accept their philoso phy. The Tahitians sum it up with a Soronged Native Girls Chatter As Actor Picks Fly Out Of Beer By BOB THOMAS AP Movie-TV Writer PAPEETE, Tahiti (AP) The skies had opened and rain was falling in a gray curtain that ob scured the reef outside the har bor. In Viama's 'Bar on the water front, the juke box was playing "Yes, Sir, That's My Baby." Chat tering above the brassy music were saronged native girls, beach combers, tourists from Australia and members of the "Mutiny on the Bounty" troupe, who have nicknamed the place "Stage 8." Among the latter group was Hugh Griffith, the glittering-eyed Welshman who won the. support ing Oscar last year as the horse trader in "Ben-Hur." He calmly picked a fly out of his beer. It was noon, and Griffith had been at Vaima's since 7:30, wait ing to see if the downpour would stop so the film company could snoot. "Fascinating," he commented. "There is nothing to do, really, except sit here and watch. You start with coffee and then you switch to beer. You watch and you see fantastic people." I had been wanting to inter view Griffith ever since he won the Academy' Award last spring. It has been difficult, since he had been making "Exodus" in Cyprus and "Counterfeit Traitor" in Ger many. The rest of his time has been spent at his country home in England, a onetime pub named the Old Red Lion. "A - wonderful place," he said fondly. "We have several acres, some cows and 30 Welsh corgies, which we raise. Nobody , recog nizes me as an actor, unless I have been in a television play, and we see no one in the profes sion. The nearest actor is IS miles away in Stratford-on-Avon." Born in North Wales and proud of it, he started as a bank clerk but did acting by night. He won a gold medal at the Royal Acad emy of Dramatic Arts but could scarcely cash in on it before the war started, "I was in. the army six and a phrase:' "ita pea pea." It means "It doesn't matter." Four weeks passed. Lee wrote to his fellow dentist that he wasn't coming back. The dentist wrote back, "You're sick, sick, sick." Lee sent him a photograph of Tahitian girls and commented, "you should be so sick." He has been here four months and he has $100 left. He made some money working on "Mutiny on the Bounty,", but now the company is gone. Lee expects to leave in four to six weeks. He may go back to the martini lunch and peering in little mouths, but he won't be the same. "When I think of how I used td be in the Brooks Brothers suit and the crew haircut, it makes me sick," said Lee, who has not cut hist hair since his arrival. "Sure, I might go back to den tistry, but it will only be to make enough money to go somewhere else in the world. Europe, per haps. I've got a lot more, to see in the world." Lee Birnkant found his dream in Tahiti, but not manv ere that lucky. For most Americans, the chance of seeking permanent es cape on this storied isle is as dead as Gauguin. Foreigners can stay no more than eight months. They cannot' take jobs; hence Lee could not practice dentistry. Beachcombing ia not possible1. There is simply no way to scrounge a living, and prices rise by the day. . Worry of FALSE TEETH Slipping or Irritating? It's hard to get your incentive back." i He did well in British films! and plays after the war and was playing Tony Perkins' father in "Look Homeward, Angel" when the "Ben-Hur" chance arose. Pro ducer Sam Zimnalist and direc tor William Wyler tested him ""in a cellar in New York" and he walked off with the part. And the picture. Griffith is only 45, though he appears older on the screen be cause of the beard he has gener ally sported. It's lacking in "Mu tiny." He seemed ot miss it as he scratched his naked chin and gazed at the pouring skies. "We won't work today," he said. "Another beer?" Increase In Draff- Rate Forseen By Hershey SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The director of the Selective Service j system foresees a possible increase 1 in the draft rate in the next five! years. Lt. Gen. Lewis M. Hershey, here for a local Selective Service con-1 ference, said this may come about; because of increased emphasis on conventional weapons and on the ' nation's readiness for limited war- j fare. . j He said he doesn't see anything ' to indicate that there will be less 1 need for troops in the next five years. "If anything, there will be ! more, he said in an interview. KOIN-TV Ch. 6 MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY 4:4fr-Ttrcourit (Mon-Thuri.) 7:-C4jrloon T!m , l-DlV-sWornlng Ntwt I )$ Capt.
