Thun., Feb. 2, 1961 Forest Park Slaying At EDITORS: Th rtcnt Portland ' Fortir Pirk muriuri hivt rev celled an earlier doublt killing in Ortgon which remiint unsolvad. The following tells tho story. By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Kight and a half years ago two men were shot to dealh in Crater Lake National Park. Police had many trails to follow but each led to a dead end. The killer has hot been found. "We are alill where we were on the day it happened," an FBI agent said recently, but "we haven't quit." Last November's slaying of Barbara Ann Allan and Larry Ralph Peyton on a lover's lane near Portland's Forest Park re called the Crater Lake killings al though there were few similari ties. ' The Forest Park killings were brutal a knifing and a strang ling and there .was no clue that gave police more than a hint which way to start.? A clause was attached to Hie hill to make it effective immedi ately if it is passed by the legis lature and signed by the governor. . Rep. R. R. Raymond, R-Helix, said the aim of this clause is to gel work underway- on planning studies for the six-county region along the Columbia River in the vicinity of the Boardman Bomb ing Range. At presenl,i the. Planning and Development Department lacks authority to receive federal funds which the state may be eligible to get for planning and develop ment. Raymond was joined by Rep. A SPORTSMAN ".' : H i r A HOUSEWIFE one or A (Mill (fi, Murders Recall Double Crater Eight Years Ago u0A ontcruri thn nark for months. There were clues, loo: ine iaiai shots were fired from a gun not often used: a pair of shoes, two wrist watches and a driver's li cense were taken and might trap the killer, But they didn't. Many now wonder, as the weeks go by, if the killing of the young coed and her boy friend also will go unsolved. Police per sistence, the Crater Lake case shows, does not always bring suc cess. There had been bright hopes, though. The victims were prominent, the FBI moved in swiftly and the clues seemed substantial. It was on Saturday, July 20, 1952, that C. P. Culhane, 55, De troit, Mich., the general sales manager for United Motors Serv ice, a General Motors subsidiary, and Albert M. Jones, 56, Conrod, Calif., his Western sales manag er, left Klamath Falls for a fish ing trip. They had met there on company business, decided on at the South Umpqua District of fice at Tiller. The old equipment was removed and new furnace and ductwork installed this week. Evangelist Joe Brill of Belling ham, Wash., was. an overnight guest Saturday at the Carl Giles home of Days Creek and appeared as special guest speaker at morn ing and evening services at the South Umpqua Community Church Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Tib betts and family of Drew took the visitor home with them as their Sunday dinner guest. Tim and Beverly Coombs have withdrawn from ihe Tiller-Drew Grade School as the family has moved from the community. John Loeglcin of Klamath Falls has been added 16 the staff of Ihe Cow Creek Ranger District as a surveying technician. He is a grad uate of Oregon Technical Institute. His wife and children will remain in Klamath Falls until the end of the school year, when they will join him to establish a home at Tiller. Several steelhead have been re ported caught recently in the vic inity of the Furlong Bridge. Mon day night's rain, and consequent rise in the river brought out nu merous hopeful fishermen Tuesday. Woshingtonian Convict On Narcotics Charges PORTLAND fAP) Ernest "Duke" Arnold, 38, of Dallesport, Wash., was convicted of three narcotics counts Tuesday by a U. S. District Court jury. Police said Arnold has been ar rested and charged many times before with narcotics violation, but never before was convicted of the charges. He was convicted Tuesday of sale, possession and transportation of heroin. Arnold was one of 13 men In dicted in December by a federal grand jury here. Two others of the 13 have been convicted. Sentence was deferred pending a pre-sentence investigation. Netv federal laws make a minimum five-year prison term mandatory for narcotics convictions. A BUSINESSMAN : I:e...'.j ; A TEEN-AGER f ANSWER:, THE DAILY NEWSPAPER! It hat some thing for everyone. Sports for the nixirtsmen, financial news for the businessman, women's interest pages, comics, social news, school news there's something for every body.Jlt's a rcmarkablelthing that one newspaper can serve so tnnny masters. And not only does it have some thing for everybody, liut. most people like most of the things in the daily newspaper. No wonder the- daily news paper is the answer to so many advertisers' needs! fishing and headed for a cabin on the Medford side of the park. Frank W. Eberlein and John Vauchn. both of Klamath Falls. followed an hour later. In the park they saw Jones' two-door se dan parked at a viewpoint over looking Annie Creek Canyon three miles from the south entrance. The right door was open, the key in the ignition lock and tismng gear, cameras and luggage all in place. When the men failed to appear, hhenein and Vaughn notitted au thorities. They were afraid they had fallen into the canyon. Search started, went through sunday and into Monday. Sudden ly a searcher came on their bod ies, bare from the waist up, a bul let hole back of the right ear of each. Both were gagged. Their shoes were off and Jones' shoes were missing. Two cartridge cas es were nearby. Their wallets had been rifled and put back in their pockets. So was Jones' driver's license. The killings could not have been long before the Klamath Falls men arrived hut they did not hear the shots. No one came by to excite suspicion. Police hopes, . though, were high, the park entrance registry listed all cars that were or had been there. The wrist watches. shoes, driver's license all were likely to turn up somewhere. The murder weapon, a 7.65 mm. prob ably of Spanish make, was dis tinctive. None of these has been found. The check of every car led to all parts of the country and produced nothing. Every time, in the years since, that a 7.65mm bullet has turned Jip, it has been checked against the Crater Lake bullets. "There has been a tremendous quantity of investigation," said an FBI agent who worked on the case. But not a single direct clue has been unearthed, One may never be, said an agent who recalled that J. Ed gar Hoover once said there are more unsolved crimes than there are uncaught criminals. The kill er, of Culhane and Jones, he said, may have died in an execution chamber for another death whose consequences he did not escape. Players To Present 'Night Must Fall!
