PLUS A FREE 79c PRESS PAD 1.29 Election Probe Urged In House SALEM (AP) House Speaker Robert Duncan, D-Medford, has urged ai investigation of the possibility of changing the date for Oregon's primary election from Jlay to September. The action was suggested by Duncan in a letter to Chairman George Annala of the House Elec tions and Reapportionment Com mittee. . Duncan said this would elimi nate the possibility of Oregon having a presidential primary unless the dates for national po litical conventions also were changed. The six-month Interval between the primary and the general elec tion makes the political cam. paigns unnecessarily long, he said. "This imposes a terrific burden upon the candidates. . .intellect ually, physically and financial ly," he said. "I think likewise that the pub lic becomes weary of an extended campaign, and that in these days of modern mass communication the issues can be fully developed in a much shorter period. ..." Duncan said that the disad vantages of eliminating the pres idential primary might be offset by the advantages of the shorter campaign. He said that delegates to na tional conventions could be select ed through political party con ventions or through the state central committees.
