British Royalty Remains Silent After Wallis' Persecution Charge LONDON (AP) British royal-1 The di'diess. the former Ameri- television personality, charged the ty and government officials today I can divorcee Wallis Simpson, said preserved expected silence toward the Dutchess of Windsor s charge that she and her husband have been persecuted by his family since he abdicated in 1936. Only a few of the duke's former subjects chimed in some bitterly denouncing the duchess and the man who quit the throne to mar ry her, others supporting them. There was no comment from the palace or the eovernmnt nor is there likely to be. Only three national newspapers report ed the duchess complaints, made in a copyrighted article in Mc the treatment given her husband, ex-king Edward Vlll, has been "enough to break anybody's spir it." She accused the royal fam ily Queen Elizabeth 11 is the duke's niece of trying to "erase every vestige of fondness his coun trymen held for him." She charged the British govern ment wasted the duke's "unparal leled knowledge" by shunting him nff riurine World War II to an in significant military post and then to the governorshiD of the Ba hamas. Acid - tbngued Charles turran Call's magazine. Only two papers I conservative member of Parlia carried comment. 'nicnt, newspaper columnist and in exile. duke himself wasted his talents. "His life is blameless, harmless, pointless, useless," Curran wrote in his weekly column. "Instead of waiting for Britain to employ him, why does he not employ himself? Why hover uneasily around the throne that he gave up?" Four Britons expressed them selves in letters to the London Daily Mail. Housewife Doris Wheddon of Bristol "It's time this woman learnt to accept her lot and be content. We all know she dearly would have liked to become queen of England. It must have been bit ter for her when she found herself P. Jl. Williams of London "What the duchess has to say is perfectly true. It really is about time they returned to live here premanently." The duchess wrote that she and the duke discussed his treatment for the first time "in all t h e s e years" when she was asked to write the article. ' She decided to break her long silence on the subject because: "lt suddenly occurred to me h o w ridiculous it is to go on behind a family-designed, government manufactured curtain of asbestos that protects the British Com monwealth from dangerous us." The duchess said "Some people think we live a playful existence." "I imagine that by some stand ards it is: but my husband is not allowed to participate in public affairs. As fur going into business, his training was not for commerce and anyway, in his position, he could hardly become the manager of an automobile showroom." The duke's abdication was of course a shock to his family, gov ernment and country, she said, but "it was done with dignity, the without "venom or bitterness, al though 24 years of persecution, even in small ways, are more than enough to break anybody's spirit."
