sic for the sheer love of it.
Associated closely in the sum
mer activities at Aspen, Colo.,
where they were performers and
members of the faculty of the Asp
en Festival, these famous musi
cians decided to carry on into the
winter season and form the first
"all-star" piano quartet since Har
old Bauer's. That renowned pian
ist of the last generation enlisted
as quartet companions Bronislaw
Hubermann, Lionel Tertis and Fe-

lametteland, Inc., it was an
nounced today.

the corporation, said that Alex
Drier, commentator for the
American Broadcasting Company
and Harry Rubenstein of Ruben
stein Furniture Co. here will be
equal partners with him in ownership.

Today, Victor Babin is the Quar
tet's pianist. Born in Russia, he
made his fame in Europe and later
in America as the "husband" half
of the two-piano teams. Vronskv
nd Babin. His coniDositions are
also widely known.
Szymon Goldberg, the distin
quished violinist, studied with Ju
nermann's teacher in Poland, and
has played concerts all over the
world. He and his wife were in
terned by the Japanese for three
terrible years in today's activitv.
Mrs. Goldberg is a sculptor. Gold
berg also conducts, and directs the I duration of the Festival Quartet;
new Netherlands Chamber Orches
tra.
William Primrose, Scottish born,
was a violin prodigy before he
turned to his real love, the viola.
A Wose friend of the Bauer Quar
tet's viola player, Tertis, Prim
rose finds enormous satisfaction
in ensemble playing, although he
is celebrated as the world's great
est exponent of the solo viola, and
has done much to enrich its reper
toire by commissioning new works.
Nikolai Graudan. cellist, like Ba
bin leaves a partner-wife for the vitation
tour. With his wife, Joanna, mis
musician has toured all over the
world. The attractive couple is one
of the few cello and piano teams
professionally before the public to
day. The Festival Quartet has a noble
repertoire on which to draw, for
some of the most beautiful but
often neglected chamber music
works of the masters have been
written in this form. The Quartet's
tour extends for over two months,

day and Saturday and Sunday in
Roseburg visiting the former's
brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and
Mrs. James O. Knudtson, and
daughter, Jeanne Ann.
Mrs. Ernest Kolborg of this city
went to Eugene over the weekend
to visit her husband, who is a pa
tient at Sacred Heart Hospital. Mr.
Kolberg recently underwent major
surgery at Sacred Heart.

noon potluck luncheon. Those at

Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Midland of
Grants Pass were here over the
weekend visiting their daughter,
Mrs. Patty Wingler, and family,
and attending the 75th anniversary
of Roscburg Chapter of Eastern
Star.
Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Preston of
this city spent Thursday, Friday,
Saturday and Sunday in Eugene
attending the 26th annual conven
tion of the Oregon Painting and
Decorators Contractors of America
held at the Eugene Hotel. The
women attending were entertained
one noon at a luncheon at Village
Green. They also enjoyed a tour of
the plant making Chefs Foods.
Preston is a member of the execu
tive committee for the state.

562,800,000 worm ol contracts were
let in 1960. This total is 25'i mil
lion dollars larger than the amount
contracted in 1959. 248 separate
contracts were awarded as com
pared to 178 awarded during 1959.

following a trip to Michigan, where
he visited his father, who recently
underwent eye surgery, and then
went on to Washington D. C. for
the National Particle Board As
sociation meeting. From there he
went to Atlanta, Ga. to attend a
technical meeting of the associa
tion. He also attended to business
in Louisville, Ky.; Dayton, Ohio,
Chicago, Denver and Portland.. ,

George Dimmick, formerly of
Roseburg, at which time he was in
the real estate business, visited
here this week with friends. He is
now making his home with his
daughter and her family at Trian
gle Lake, 38 miles from Eugene.

went to Portland Friday to attend

here from Gold Beach, Ore. and

Mr. and Mrs. William J. (Mon
ty) Smith and sons. 4 and 2 years
old and 9 months-old, have moved
here from Billings, Mont., and are
residing at 813 NE Alameda. Smith
is employed by KRNR radio sta
tion. Mr. and Mrs. Alexis Orloff of
this city spent Thursday in Eugene
attending a four-hour lecture pre
sented by V. E. Irons of Boston,
who is president of the V. E.

for the company attended the meeting.
Bob Fiet. son of Mrs. Harry Le-
Bcnu and grandson of Mrs. Edgar
Lewis of this city, has been ac
cepted as one of the students from
Stanford to have the spring semes
ter in Florence, Italy. Two profes
sors from Stanford will accompany
the group and will teach courses in
art and psychology. The Italian
will be taught by Italians. The
group will have three-day week
ends during the semester so that
considerable traveling can be done
throughout Europe by the students.
Bob is in his second year of pre
nicdicinc at Stanford.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hamilton of
this city left last week for Southern
California to enjoy a vacation.

made a business trip to Eugena
and back last week.
