I Water Sets Off
Burglary Alarm
PORTLAND (AP) A burglar
alarm went off early Tuesday at
Hie three-story office building of
Centennial .Mills Inc. Police found
that the intruder uas nut a burg
lar but water.
a cny water main broke in two
places, said Curtis l.indley, a vice
president of the firm, and buckled
much of the basement floor as
well as the concrete flour of a
quality control laboratory on the
ground level of the building.
"lhe damage will run into
thousands of dollars." he said.
The floor of the basement and the
laboratory looked as if thev had
exploded, he said.
When police and company em
ployes arrived in answer io the
alarm, they found three feet of
water in the basement and from
tour to live inches in the labora
tory. Patrolman Edward D. Orliu
said he was nearly knocked down
by a three-foot wave of water
when he opened a door.
The burglar alarm was set off,
l.indley said, when the cascading
water broke open a door wired to
the alarm system.

After' taking the oath of office
herself. Airs. Neuberger escorted
liepiiblican Sen. Margaret Chase
Smith to take the oath for her
third term in the Senate.
The two women, both wearing
blue of different hues, took their
seats on opposite skies of the
aisle as the senate began its new
session.
Mrs. Neuberger occupied th
third row seat which bad been,
used for years by her late hus
band. Sen. Richard Neuberger.
Meanwhile in the House of Rep
resentatives, another woman new
comer to the 87tli Congress Airs.
Julia Butler Hansen, O-Wasli.,
was sworn in loo.
Freshman Mrs. Hansen, stood
en masse with the House mem
bers to take the oath.

House voted today to seat as
members two Democrats whoso
election had been challenged, but
rejected similar action affecting a
Republican.
Reps. Morgan Moulder, D-Mo.,
and Victor Wickersham, D-Okla.,
were sealed 0:1 motion of Demo
cratic Floor Leader John Mc
Cormack of Massachusetts. -
George O. Chambers of Indiana,
apparently elected as a Republi
can, was asked to stand aside un
til election results are determined
by the House Administration
Committee.
The issue of seating Moulder
and Wickersham was settled bv
what appeared to be a straight
party voice vote, although no roll
call on the main question was
taken.

Arbiter Orders Sears
To Reinstate Employes
SAN FRANCISCO (AP)-Sears
Roebuck t Co. has been directed
to reinstate employes fired here
last year when they reftued to
work during a machinists union
strike.
An arbiter ruled Tuesday that
more than 100 clerks who lost
their jobs in May must be re
stored to their former positions
or to jobs of equal pay status.
Arthur C. Miller said in a 65-
page decision that the firm vio
lated its contracts with Depart
ment Store Employes Local I10O
and Shoe and Textile I-ocal 410.
Ilo'h are affiliates of the Retail
Clerks, International Association.
But dismissed employes who
took part in boycotts against
Sears also violated their contract,
Miller ruled, and are not entitled
to back pay.
Finn Airliner Crashes
VAASA. Finland (AP) - All 25
persons aboard a Finnish airliner
were killed early today when the
I)C3 crashed into a wooded area
north of the west coast port of
Vaasa. Finnish police reported.
Kahlcvi Tiainen, a farmer who
rushed to the scene of the crash,
said:
"There was a sudden explosion
in the air, and the plane became
a giant torch which plunged
straight down."
