est level or a nonstrike period
in more than 20 years. Estimated
production was 1,122,000 tons, or
1 33.4 per cent of capacity, com
! pared with 1,325.000 tons, or 46 5
i per cent the preceding week
An improvement in orders is
I expected in January but an up
turn to about 60 per cent oi ca
pacity isn't anticipated until
.March.
The automakers cut their oper
ations sharply because of low
sales and high inventories. The
week's production was estimated
at 84.909 passenger cars, down
from 115.115 last week and 112.

year.
New car sales in llw middle 10
days of December were among
the lowest for the period in re
cent years. Dealers sold about
142.000 cars, compared with 160.
