Husky's Back Says Team 'Ready' LOS ANGELES (AP) The reckless running inspirational leader of Washington's Huskies said Tuesday his team does not expect to catch Minnesota by sur prise in the fashion of last year's Rose Bowl game. "We know they are not going to lose their poise," said co-captain and halfback Don McKcta. "They've been too great a fourth quarter team for that to happen." But he reaffirmed a Husky vow that Washington will not be beat en phys'cally in the Jan. 2 battle. "We have a team cf tremendous morale and a tough, conditioned one," he said. "We'll be ready." McKcta is a 26-ycar-old, one time sailor without exceptional physical gifts but with a competi tive zeal that made him All-Big Five this year and perhaps the most valuable player on the team. He hits hard and relentlessly, on offense and defense. The Min nesota coaches are unanimous in admiring his toughness and abili ty to make the crucial play. With his temperament, McKcta underrates no opponent. "We beat Wisconsin pretty bad ly in the Rose Bowl last year but I don't think that's a reason to lose any respect for the Big Ten," be said. "I grew up believing the Big Ten was No. 1 football, and it's still a great conference. We sur prised Wisconsin last year with our speed. The breaks went our way, too, and we just kept scor ing." The final was 44-8. Washington makes no secret of Its intention to topple the national champion with the same weapon that whipped Wisconsin speed. "We'd like fo get George Flem ing loose a few times," said Mc Kcta. "It would help offset some of that grinding offensive power that Minnesota is going to hit us with."
