    Tuci,, Dec. 27, I960 The Newi-Roview. Rmcburg, Ore. 7
As the Old Year staggers to an
inevitable end, many of us can
look back with kindly feelings fur
v hat it lias brought us. .Must of
us will be looking forward, to 1961
with high hopes that it will out
class 1960. And this Column hopes
that nary a one of it's readers
will be disappointed. May your
average rare up to 200 and your
strikes outnumber your splits.
But we wonder if our hopes have
too good a foundation in certain
lines. Ray Wise, secretary of the !
Men's Stale Assn. reports only 72 i
teams, up to last week, with only!
12 days left. We haven't been ask- i
ed to attest many entries from !
this association. We hope for a big j
turnout, as we must use Roseburg-1
Sutherlin entries as grounds fori
bringing the 1961 tournament to!
Douglas County. Take your time in
submitting entries, but remember,
"Closing dale is Jan. 8."
Unless things work out different
ly in the Women's Assn. their hopes
for an entry list of 600 teams will
also, fall short. We hope not, of
course. There is nothing in sight
to give any inkling of the future,
since their entry date is between
Jan. 1 and 14th.
Entries Close
And just to make things even
more binding, the All-Coast also
closes Us entries Jan. 8, with
"Roseburg Week" being April 29
30. One advantage there is that
only the team entry must be paid
in advance. All doubles and sin
gles can be paid when you howl,
as entries there will not close un
til the very end of the tournament
on June 25, 1961.
The holidays have slightly dis
rupted schedules around Central
Douglas County. Most Roseburg
men's teams will lay off this week,
but nearly all will start up in
business immediately after N e w
Years. Some of the girls will bowl
this week, and some won't, so
check your schedules, gals, or ask
your secretary.
At rour Winds Bowl? where op
erations started a bit later last
fall, most leagues will bowl straight
through the holiday week, with
make-up games for those who
were out of town. Again, check
with your secretaries.
Half Done
Several leagues finished their
first half, and some contests were
tighter than a wet sweater. Top
three in Town league had 48-47-47
points respectively; a tie devel
oped in the Industrial with a roll
off lined up for Bruton's Shoe Serv
ice and B.P.O.E. Also in the Ump
qua Jenscn-Kees will have a sud
den death set with the Oregonian.
Four top teams within two points.
What may be a record score lo
cally was piled up by Fairhaven
Cleaners in the Major last week.
Bob Reid hit 2U-204-234 for 649.
Ed Davis 224-610. Art Lohr 595
and Jerry Bauer 257-597. Grand tot
al 2434 scratch for four men.
Vera Crenshaw had a 151152-153
stepladder. Dorothy Renner left a

Hap Says Growth Plans
Are Death For Baseball
By DORMAN COROELL
VERSAILLES, Ky. (AP) For
mer baseball Commissioner A.B.
Chandler today called the major
league expansion plans another
step on the road to destruction of
the national pastime. .
Tlie owners treated coldly a
proposal he made 10 years ago
for orderly expansion, the two
time Kentucky governor and for
mer U.S. senator recalled.
"They have failed to take into
account what was coming, and
now they're going about it piece
meal." he said in an interview.
"We tried to get them to plan
for expansion to 10 teams in each
league maybe 12 if necessary
and then eventually breaking up
into three leagues. One would be
in the East, one in the central
section and one in the western
United States.
"The World Series would have
operated by giving one league's
winner a bye in ine urst rouna.
Chandler, who was dropped as ;
commissioner in I9.u, saia it
would have' been better to have i
taken in the old Pacific Coast j
League,, as was proposed at one.
time. !
"Baseball must have continuous
rivalries to thrive, with opponents
as close to each other as pos
sible," he said. j
New teams of casloff players
aren't going to win games or ,
draw crowds, Chandler said. '
'The' only thing this paying of,
$75,000 per player for players past ,
their prime, castoffs and the like
is going to do is cause the new
qwners to go broke unless they .
have unlimited funds." j
