Grants Pass Lady, 78, Spends All Year
Making A Merry Christmas For Others
GRANTS PASS (AP)-The mail
comes in a torrent, some of it
addressed only to "The Christmas
Card Lady." It all goes to Airs.
Mary Waters, who spends the
year helping' others to have a
Jlerry Christmas.
The 78-year-old woman rehabili
tates used Christmas cards, and
sends them to veterans hospitals
in Oregon. This year, she sent
more than 12,000 cards, plus 2,000
smaller gift cards.
Why does she do it?
Mrs. Waters said she became
aware of the Christmas problems
of cash-shy patients in veterans
hospitals ' when her lale husband
was hospitalized.
Althoueh confined most of the
time to a chair by arthritis, she
spends most of her waking hours
working on me unrisimas carus.
She rehabilitates each one by eith
er usine bleach to erase the sig
nature, or pasting over it with
paper. Afterward, she said, they
look like new. She makes new en
velopes, loo.
The cards are bundled up and
sent to veterans hospitals in Rose
burg, Portland, Medford and Van
couver, Wash. The veterans then
send them out to their friends.
Lack Of Manpower
Noted On Carrier
NEW YORK (AP) The senior
safety inspector aboard the ill
fated Constellation testified today
his greatest problem in "getting
things corrected was lack of man
power." Robert J. McCartney, the in
spector, also told a Court of In
quiry that "we were stymied to a
certain extent by lack of funds,"
although ship superintendents
complied with his safety recom
jnendations "with few excep
tions." .The court probing the Monday
fire that killed 49 men aboard the
hufte aircraft carrier did not press
him concerning what the lack of
manpower and money prevented
him from doing. He did not say
what tVio exceptions to his recom
mendations were.
McCartney said that he was in
stalling portable loud speaking
. system when he noticed oil flow
ing down the deck. The Navy has
said fuel from a ruptured fuel
tank ignited and started the $75
million fire aboard the vessel un
der construction.
McCartney said that after the
oil appeared he followed instruc
tions and 10 U 12 times announced
over the system that no burning,
smoking or wielding would be per
mitted. Flames appeared shortly after
ward and McCartney said he
again followcid instructions and
announced an order to abandon
ship.
He doubled his announcements
were heard on decks other than
the one he was on, the hangar
or main deck.
Mrs. Waters has been working
on cards for 18 years, and esti
mates she has processed more
than 125.000. A freight line
provides free delivery to the hos
pitals. The used cards come to her
from all over the country. She
lives at Pleasant Valley, a small
community near here, but pack
ages addressed only to "The
Christmas Card Lady" reach her.
Postal authorities said that
lh?re were an average of 11 in
coming packages a day for her
last February.
She also receives letters from
organizations all over the nation,
asking details of her work. She
says she is confident that her
work will be continued by others.
For years she answered the cor
respondence by hand. This year,
friends gave her a typewriter.
Crosby Admits Intimacy With Brunette Divorcee
LOS ANGELES (AP) Dennis
Crosby and divorcee Marilyn Mil
ler Scott agree they were inti
mate, but he says he seriously
doubts he fathered her 3-year-old
daughter. Crosby says the intima
cies were under alcoholic circum
stances on his part.
Twice they were intimate, Mrs.
Scott testified Wednesday, be
tween outbursts of tears, in her
paternity suit against the 26-year-old
twin, one of crooner Bing
Crosby's four singing sons.
"I was in love with him," the
tall, 28-year-old brunette told the
jury. She is asking that the jurors
declare Dennis Michael Crosby the
father of her daughter Denise Mi
chelle. Dennis entered a formal denial
of paternity and said his doubts
are based on what he called Mrs.
Scott's "bad morals."
"She has been seen out late in
this type of bars, and I have heard
rumors that I wasn't the one,"
he told the jury of nine married
women and three married men.

City Seeks To Fill
Natural Reservoir
THE DALLES (AP) Engi
neers are going to pump surplus
water from Mill Creek into an
underground reservoir to try to
restore the water table at The
Dalles.
They started it Wednesday, put
ling the first Mill Creek water
inlo the 14th St. reservoir, where
it will be filtered and chlorinated,
then pumped into the under
ground reservoir.
Engineers of the city and the
U. S. Geological Survey say there
is a vast natural reservoir under
ground here. The city has drawn
on it so heavily, however, that
the water level has dropped
sharply in each of the last three
summers.
Engineers hope to put 200 or
.100 million gallons of water into
the reservoir before next
summer.
