were presented to the Canyonville
Methodist Church School at its an
nual Christmas program held re
cently, according to Virginia Proc
tor, correspondent. Following the
program, which featured all age
groups in the church school par
ticipating in telling the Christmas
story, an open house was held in
the church annex-with the Guild
ladies as hostesses. .

An expressed wish of a year ago
and a friendly act making the
wish come true have brought a
warm and happy feeling to a cou
pie of old friends this Christmas'
season. I
Vague memories of long-ago i
Christmases as a child in his na
tive Jacksonville and the fleeting j
imagined scent of fragrant even
greens, grown more tantalizing in
repeated recollections, were ex-1
pressed by Vance (Pinto) Colvig in
a note added to his last year's
Christmas greeting to Miss Bess
Clough of Canyonville. She resolv-i
ed then and there to see that he'
had a fresh green tree from Ore
gon for the 19t0 holiday season.

Colvig is a grandson of Canyon- j
ville's first physician and druggi.Nt,
Dr. William F. Colvig, who set
lied ill Canyonville in ISj.V His
mother's people, the Birdseyes,
settled helween Cold Hill and
Rogue River where the more-than-a-centuryold
home still stands
along the highway at Eirdseye
Creek. I
Miss Clough. who attended i con
vent school in Jacksonville, be
came acquainted with the Colvig
family there. Over the years the

('lunch's published history of Doug
las County made lis apjH-arauce
during the Canyonville Centennial.
Colvig learned of the book and
wrote Alls Clough, and they
have exchanged Christmas greet
ings anil occasional letters since.
The tree which Miss Clough ship
ped to Colvig last week was ob
tained under Forest Service free
use permit from the Slick Creek
area some IS miles northeast of
Tiller. 11 was a small, densely
blanched, deep green Douglas fir.

Dakota the mercury dipped to 20
below zero.
At least 16 deaths were attrib
uted lo stormy weather, which
erupted in the Plains and spread
eastward rapidly. The storm
deaths included 7 in Illinois, 5 in
Ohio, 3 in Michigan and 1 in
Missouri.
The blustery, snowy cold spread
from (he eastern I'ockies into the
Northeast in the wake of a snow
storm which left foot-high falls in
the Midwest.
Subzero readings were reported
from the Northern Plains into
Wisconsin. Iowa and Illinois.
II was 20 below zero at Huron,
S. D., and 18 at Willston, N.D.,
in Hie predawn hours.
The temperature snared lo 86
degrees at Miramar, Calif., Tues
day and the sunshine boosted the
thermometer inlo the 80s again to
day. The same patient appeared
in all Southern California, but
! there were gusty winds in some
areas.
I Tuesday's 81 in Los Angeles
j was the warmest Dec. 20 since
193.1.
In upstate New York Ihe snow
fall continued loday with the new
fall in the northern portion up lo
8 inches and 5 inches in the Buf
falo area. The speed limit nn a
large section of the State Thru
way was reduced lo 35 miles an
hour because of road conditions.
M..st of Connecticut had rain, al
though Ihere was stillicient snow
in the area to close, schools in
Norfolk.
The storm lost some of its
force in crossing the Allcghanies.
Newark, N.J., had a morning
lemperature reading of 42 de
grees and a steady rain elimi
nated icy spols on most of the
slate's highways.
Snow mixed wilh sleet and rain
began Tuesdav nieht in weslprn
I Maryland and continued through
the morning.
In Ohio, the snow aecumulaled
up to 10 inches, disrupting traf
fic and normal activities through
out the state. Schools were closed
in most sections of lite slate,
