'i Interesting Program Is Being Carried Out For The Benefit Of The Deaf Opening the doors to the world of sound is a weekly experience for a Roseburg girl who is a sophomore at Walla Walla College. Every week Sonya Van Allen, eldest daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Leland Van Allen who have recently mov ed to Oceanlake, teaches a class for the deaf in the Walla Walla Col lege Sabbath School. Through the language of moving fingera she sends sermon and song into the eyes of the deaf members of the college church. Attending the Oregon Seventh day Advcntist camp meeting at Gladstone, an eight-year-old girl watched, fascinated, as a class of deaf people "heard" the sermons and special songs through the fin gers of a teacher. Two years ago as she again watched this same group she decided that she, too. would learn to open the doors of sound for the deaf. When she went to college she found a class of deaf people who were "listening" through the fingers of Mrs. Lyle Johnson and Sonya began learning to speak their language. Mrs. Johnson helped her as she tried to master the many motions. "It was painfully slow at first." she says. for she had to spell out most of the words, sonya says she thor oughly enjoys being "ears" for those who cannot hear. Sonya, a biology major and an artist, recently wrote and conduct ed a program (in costume) depict ing several phases of oriental cul ture, during Culture Week at the college. Miss Van Allen, who has two sis ters. Brenda and Tamera. and a brother, Duane, was a student at Roseburg Junior Academy and in the Myrtle Creek church school. She went with her parents to the Philippines where Dr. Van Allen, dentist, was stationed during his service for the army. She attended the Adventist academies in Manila and in Singapore. After returning home she went to Milo Academy one year and then went to Mt. El lis Academy in Bozeman, mom., for her final academic year. This is her second year at Walla Walla College. She is the granddaughter of Mrs. Andrea Van Allen.
