Adelines Hold Party The Timber City Chapter of Sweet Adelines held a delighfful social night affair Thursday at the home of Judy Bauer on NB Knoll with Patricia Boyle as co nostess. A Chinese auction was followed by tne group enjoying Harmonizing Betty Miner presented an action song; Martha Wishart read a poem and Marie Emra gave a reading with JoAnne Lawrence depicting tne reading with a chalk drawing Lovely refreshments were served by the two hostesses to Faye Campbell, Marie Emra. Evelyn Peterson Chapter Guest Mrs. Roland Robertson of Rid dle and Mrs. Charles Dowd of Can yonville were co-hostesses at a luncheon given recently at the Rob ertson home honoring Miss Evelyn Peterson of San Diego and includ ing members of Beta Xi Chapter, Beta Sigma Phi. Miss Peterson, a guest of Mrs. Dowd, is manager of Fashionality Modeling School in San Diego and came here to help the chapter pre pare for Hi annual spring fashion show. Following the luncheon, Miss Pe terson coached the ladies in the principles of modeling. Mrs. Robertson was hostess for a potluck luncheon during the week when mcmners made decorations for their annual Christmas parly. The cake, made land decorated by Mrs. O'lioke, hore the words, "Happy Birthday, jSon and Sister Manning," in red arosting on white. , On the following night, the Rev. and Mrs. Manning were surprised at the O'Roke home by being pre sented with another cake made and baked by Mrs. Rose Shepherd. The cake which the two families again shared, was white and was decorated with pink and white roses. KIDDER, one of Roseburg's best loved resi dents, was honored at a surprise no-host dinner party Sun day at his home on Stephens Street in observance of his 90th birthday anniversary. He crossed the plains while a baby in arms. He has spent a number of years in the Philippine Islands. He is the father of three sons, Stanley Rast Kidder, of the Embassy of the United States of Amer ica, Saigon, Viet Nam; Robert P. Kidder, medical adminis trative assistant to the director of professional services of the Roseburg Veterans Administration, and Major Jack Kidder, of the U. S. Army, Fort Lewis, Wash. He has 10 grandchildren: Robin, Phyllis and Nancy Kidder, Rose burg; Jim, Bob, John, Leo, Bruce and Ann Kidder, Seattle, and Saroh Kidder, Viet Nam. He also has a sister, Bess Kidder McDaniels, of Portland. Two beautifully decorated birth day, cake were cut and served to honor Mr. Kidder and also lo hon or Mrs. Arthur Baum, who ob served her 81st birthday recently. Visiting was enjoyed during the pleasant social hours, Mr. Kidder was a baby In his mother's arms when the family crossed the plains from Iowa to Terrace, Utah in the early 1870's He was born in Carroll County, Iowa, Dec. 4, 1870. The family la ter lived in Virginia City, where Kidders father was a carpenter at the famed Comslock Lode mine When he was about 9 years of age, the family moved to San Francisco. The city then had all cobblestone streets. The next year found the family residing in San redro and later they moved to Hoquiam, Wash., which Kidder re members as a paradise place for hunters and fishermen and with no licenses to bother with and no limits on fish or same caught From Wasmnglon the family went to Gold Hill to take up homestead on Evans Creek and the fall of 1890, the family moved Mr. Kidder to Roseburg. Kidder went to school here and as he was growing up he drove a dray for Mullens and Jim Templin. In January 1900 Kidder left for the Philippine Islands and during the following years, he returned here to visit a number of times. He married Maude Rast Dec. 30, 1908. He was in the U.S. Postal Service in Manila and was later transfer red to Marshall, Texas, and later lo rocalello, Idaho, where (hey spent two years, and then trans ferred lo Roseburg. where he serv. ed all of the Oregon territory. He resigned from the Postal Service in ladi and owned and operated a shoe store on Jackson Street in Hosenurg for the next eight years. In 1929, the Kidders again returned to The Philippines to enter busi. ness there. They were in Manila at the time the Japanese con. quered the Philippines and were in terned 37 months at Santa Thomas prison camp. Upon being liberated from the camp, Mr. and Mrs. Kid der returned to Roseburg, where they have resided since. Kidder enjoys good health and has a number of activities he keeps an interest in. For 20 years they resided on their homestead in Garden Valley which they sold when they moved to Roseburg. Four children blessed their home, Clinton, who now resides at Ft. Richardson, Alaska: Leslie, who resides at Albuquerque. N.M., with his familv; Dean, who lives at Seattle. Wash., and Mrs. Ellen Bostwick of Seattle.
