    Efosebtirg Faces Tillamook
Roseburg'i Indians will defend
their second place stale rating Sat
urday at 8 p.m. when the local
hoopsters travel to Tillamook for
1 single clash.
The Indians sta.ted the season
as the number four team in the
state and as a result of their split
with the top ranked Klamath Falls
Pelicans the Indians moved into
second place behind the Pelicans.
In the openers Roseburg eked out
a 64-62 overtime win over the Peli
cans and then lost the second
game as the Klamath team came
from behind in the final period to
win 78-73.
Indian Coach Pltattd
Coach Gurt Jarvis was pleaded
with his team's showing last week
end and has been working with the
boys on their weak points in prep
aration for the Tillamook game.
The team is ready and though the
Tillamook cagcrs are not rated the
Indians are not planning on an
easy contest.
Leading the Indians to battle will
be Jim Jarvis, a flashy 6 0 guard.
Jim racked up 30 points against
the Pelicans in the first game of
the season and then came back
the second night to score 36 points,
accomplishing this the hard way
with 30 points in the first half.
The Indian all-stater will be ready
to go again Saturday hoping to
keep his 33 point-per-game aver
age intact or to improve it.
Lynn Baxter
Rook Starter
Lynn Baxter will be a probable
starter for the OSC Rooks this year
as the ex-Roscburg guard has been
showing well in practice sessions.
Another ex-Midwestern League
eager listed on the Rooks roster
is 6-11 center Mel Counts from
Marshfield. Local fans are well
aware of the scoring threat the
lanky ex-Pirate represents and the
comment around Corvallis is, "Too
nau counts is only a freshman
mis year.
The towering Dost man is reoort
cd to be the most promising Hook
in years perhaps ever. lie can
hold his own with the more exper
ienced varsity hoopsters in prac
tice sessions and at a recent scrim
mage with the Oregon College of
Education varsity Counts scored
46 points in three quarters of play
ing time.
Baxter worked at a guard posi
tion last year for the Roseburg
Indians and combined with Jim
Jarvis to represent the deadliest
?air of guards in the league,
he speedy guard was one of the
top scorers for the Indians last
year and along with Counts and
Rex Benner of Grants Pass is lit 1
ed as a top prospect for the OSJ.

Roseburg will have Marv French
at the other guard spot. French,
a 511 junior, showed well against
the Pelicans exhibiting good ball
control and lots of hustle. Display
ing a pair of fast hands French
led the Roseburg team in steals as
he grabbed the ball away from
the Klamath ball handlers. In the
second game French accounted for
eight steals in the second half.

and will be on the floor as a for

won the first game against Klam
ath Falls with a jump shot sec
onds before the end of the over
ti in s period and then came back
Saturday night with a brilliant sec
ond half to keep the Indians in
the thick of the battle. The 60
senior picked up 15 points each
night and has a 15-point-per-game
average.
At the other forward slot will
be Ray Palm, a 6-2 junior, to give
the Indians rebounding strength.
Palm led the Roseburg rebound
crs in the opener against a tall
group from Klamath Falls. Four
fouls held the lanky forward down
in the second contests.
Ron Lake will hold down the cen
ter spot and will be the tallest In
dian on the starting five standing
at 6-4. Lake is averaging 7.5
points-per-game ranking third
among the Indians and is among
the top rebounders on the Rose
burg team.
Expected to see action for Rose
burg are reserves Tom Hobbs and
Doug Lyda in the backcourt. along
with Gordon Avery at the guard
positions. Hobbs is the only re
serve player in the scoring column
as he picked up three points in
Roseburg' opener.
Other backcourt men making the
trip for the Indians are Richard
Bakala, John Cordell and John
Todd. Reserves at the guard pos
ition will be Chuck Hincy, Bill
Brothers, Jim Munion and Bruce
Long.
For the Tillamook cagers Satur
day will be the first game of the
season. The coastal team Is re
ported to emphasize speed rather
man size, but are capable of re
bounding well. The contest with
Tillamook promises to be another
thriller for the local squad.
Statistics show the Indians are
deadly from the free throw line
as they have hit 31 out of 37 at
tempts for a .838 per centage on
charity tosses. Jim Jarvis is the
player that gets fouled the most
as he has shot 21 times from the
foul line and has made 18 points
on free throws.
After two games the Indians are
averaging 68.5 points per - game
having scored 137 points in their
first two games. This outstanding
scoring record has been built up
on 53 field goals and 31 free
throws.

James Norris
Faces Probe
WASHINGTON (AP) -James
D. Norris, who says he dealt re
luctantly with mobster Frankie
Carbo, ficed his last round today
before Senate investigators who
want more details of relations be
tween the two prizefight figures.
Norris was called back for ad
ditional closed-door questioning by
the Senate Antitrust and Monop
oly subcommittee, which was
making public a transcript of his
testimony. ,
He testified Thursday he asso
ciated with Carbo in the fulfilled
hope of averting difficulties with
boxing managers who howled for
more money and threatened to pull
out of televised bouts.
Norris formerly headed the In
ternational Boxing Clubs, disband
ed by court order last year for
monopolizing championship fights.
Hs was excused from testifying
in public after doctors agreed the
strain might provoke another
heart attack. Norris, 53, already
nas been stricken twice.
John G. Bonomi. special conn
sel to the subcommittee, said he
planned to get down to cases to
day about Norris' contacts with
Carbo. Long regarded as the un
derworld's boxing boss. Carbo is
in the midst of a two-year prison
term lor undercover mampuia
tions as manager and match
maker.
Other witnesses had linked the
names of Norris and Carbo. Nor
ris said Carbo visited his New
York apartment about twice a
year for a decade. He portrayed
Carbo as knowing more fight man
agers than anyone else in the game.
He said he employed Viola
Masters the girl friend who later
married Carbo as a ' good will
representative." He denied that the
move was an effort to curry favor
with Carbo, but conceded later
that "possibly unconsciously I had
that in mind."
After listening to Norris. the
subcommittee headed by Sen. Es-
tcs Kcfauver, D-Tenn., planned to
open the doors for appearances by
boxing managers Bernie Glickman
of Chicago and Frank Mitchell of
St. Louis, plus alleged St. Louis
racketeer John Vitale.
Glickman manages former wel
terweight champion Virgil Akins
and has been tagged among Car
bo's close friends. Mitchell once
was listed as mrnagcr of Sonny
Liston, top ranking heavyweight
contender. He publishes a weekly
newspaper in St. Louis. I
