Some two weeks ago, Michael was standing on a child's rocking chair when he slipped on his broth er's toy gun and fell to the floor, fracturing the bone in his upper left leg. He spent eight days in Forest Glen Hospital in Canyon ville and now faces another month in his crib with both lei's fastened securely at right angles to his body. Michael is one of a set of trip lets, a brother. Merlin, and sister, Mary, completing the threesome. Gordon ' Swope, a business rep resentative of the Food and Drug Clerks Union, said a minority of Portland food stores had told their workers they, planned to be open on Christmas Day. a Sunday. The legal holiday is Monday. The clerks in their meeting adopted a resolution calling on all stores to close on Sunday as well as on the legal holiday for Christ mas. Swope said this had heen the practice in Portland in past years wnen cnrisimas leu on aun day. The resolution asked the nuhlii- to help in reversing the plan of some oi me siores to be open. "Christmas has always been ob served in Portland as a famik day, free from commercialism ex cept tor me most essential serv ices," Swope said. Mrs. Standridge says that Mi chael remains cheerful and is a good little patient, despite his dis comfort and the immobilitv of his position. He has little appetite, and she says he is losing weight, evi dent in a comparison with his trip let brother. Partly to brighten Michael's days, but also in response to en thusiastic urging of the other youngsters, the Standridge set up and trimmed a Christmas tree ear ly this week. Six common species of rain beetles are known from Oregon, mostly from the Coast Range and western slopes of the Cascades bordering the Willamette Valley. One species found in Sherman Countv extends into sage brush country along the John Day River. Beetles are found most commonly in clearings in Douglas fir or pon derosa pine forests. Skunks Like Beetles : ' Skunks feed largely on rain bee tles in the fall and often the first indication of rain beetles are signs of skunks digging and wing covers of beetles skunks have eaten.
