Interim Group Eyes New Farm Land Tax
'"CORVAIXIS (AP) New pro
cedures for taxing farm land will
be introduced to the next legisla
ture by the Jnterim Committee on
Agriculture, Sen. Francis Zicgler,
its chairman, said here.
Two bills will be submitted, he
said, and in effect, they oppose
the procedure recommended by
the Interim Committee on Taxa
tion. - Zieglar said one bill would allow
the zoning of farm land by a coun
ty zoning commission or a county
court. The other would require the
assessor to appraise and assess
the farm land as it is zoned.
The Tx Committee has pro
posed legislation allowing the zon
ing of farm land. However, it
would require the property owner,
when the land is subdivided, to pay
back faxes at subdivision rates as
they would have been levied the
seven previous years, plus inter
est. Ziegler iaid some members of
his commritce would oppose the
back payment feature of the Tax
Cummittee proposal on the ground
that, in effect, it would be a lien
on the property. They also oppose
the state collecting interest on
such taxes, he said.
The committee feels that a prop
erty owner selling his land for
subdivision would pay a capital
gains tax and a further tax would
be unwarranted, he said.

As things stand in the National
Basketball Association, it looks
like another championship playoff
next spring between the Boston
Celtics and St. Louis Hawks un
less the Philadelphia Warriors can
come up with the necessary in
gredients. The Warriors remained only one
game behind idle Boston in the
ICastern Division, after defeating
the Syracuse Nationals 113-107 in
the first game of a Madison
Square Garden twin bill Tuesday
night.
This dropped Syracuse, which
wa-. riding a four-game winning
streak, seven games behind the
Celtics.
The Hawks, meanwhile, held a
5'4i-game edge over the. idle Los
Angeles Lakers after knocking off
the Detroit Pistons 146-110 at St.
Louis.
In the only other NBA game,
the Cincinnati Royals whipped the
New York Knickerbockers, 117
112, in the second half of the
Garden doubleheader. New York
is in the- Eastern Division cellar,
which Cincinnati holds the same
spot in the Western section.
In three of the last four seasons,
Boston has met St. Louis in the
playoff finals, the Celtics winning
twice. In 1958-59, Boston won out
over the Minneapolis (Now Los
Angeles) Lakers.
