Brundage's Jump Shot Gives Indians Win 1 IfHX lie t i 1. 1 i i i I u 'IMA , I friday FORWARD RAY PALM sends the boll towards the basket in Friday's contest between the Roseburg Indians and the Klomath Falls Pelicans. Palm led the Indians in rebounds and guard Jim Jorvis paced the scorers with 30 points as the Roseburg cagers eked out a 64-62 overtime victory over the favored Pelicans. Mike Brundage climaxed the thriller by sinking a jump shot with three seconds remaining in the three-minute overtime period which gave Roseburg the victory in its season opener. (News-Review Photo) Hornets Of Camas Pace North Bico The Cama Valley Hornets set the pact in the North Bico-B League Jamboree at Elklon Fri day night. Camas Valley was the only team to remain unbeaten in 3 periods of action while Yoncalla'j Eagles, Powers' Cruisers and Elkton's Elks ended the night's action with iden tical 1-2 records. Kiter Top Scorer Royce Kiser was the top scorer of. the Jamboree as the Hornet ace scored 20 points in three eight minute quarters. ' Red Wiley and Ron Ravolle of Yoncalla followed Kiser wan eight points apiece. Yoncalla's Eagles scored points to top the teams in the scoring column with the Hornets scoring 31 points to follow the Ea gles. Elkton had a total of 21 points and Powers scored 15. In the opening quarter of the Jamboree Elkton edged Yoncalla 12-10 as Linn Clemo and David Gates scored four points apiece for the winners. Wiley and Revelle led the Eagles with three points each. Hornets Down Cruisers The Hornets look over in the second period of action and down ed the Cruisers 11-8. as Kiser 1 set th pace picking up eight Glide Wildcats Victors Over JVs Of Roseburg Glide's Wildcats came from a first half deficit and held off a last minute effort by the Rosa burg Jayvees -Friday night on the Jayvecs home floor to win their opener 62 57. Score Quick 19 Points The Wildcats scored 10 points he fore the Jayvees could find the basket in the opening quarter, but managed to lead by only one point at the first break. The Jayvees scored 19 points in the second per iod to lead 3I-2B at lialftime. Glide came back after tha halftime break and jumped back into the lead holding a 44 43 edge at the end of , the third quarter. Going into the final minutes of the contest the Wildcats boasted 10 point lead only to see the Jay vees score seven points in the last minute in a gallant effort to catch tip with the Glide hoopsters. Coplin 'Ltads Attack Forward Doug Coplin led the Wildcat attack with 20 points as he connected for 10 points in the third period. Forward John Hal field added 10 points for the win ners ana Ron Polley picked tip nine. Jim Wassnm led the .Jayvees from a forward position and was the top scorer of the game with 23 points. . Guard Paul Brothers scored 11 points for the Jayvees and freshman center Bruce O'Neill, G-4, added 10 more to the score- hoard. Powers edged Elkton in the low scoring quarter of the Jamboree as the Cruisers tallied three points compared to a lone basket for the Elks. Larry Binder scored the only two Duinls for Elkton while Hiih Cnlho and Ainslio Krans tallied the points ior the Cruisers. Rolls To 3rd Victory ' Camas Valley returned to action against the Elks and rolled to its third victory of the evening win ning 14-7. Kiser led the Hornets with 10 points and Allen Boyd tal lied the other four for the winners. Milton Chcever picked up two points for the Elks as the other four points came on foul shots by four players. The Eagles roared back in the final eight minute period to wal lop Powers 20-4. Wiley and Revelle led the Eagles with five points apiece and Jerry Iteeves scored four poinls for the winners. Glenn McDonald and Howard Russell each accounted for a field goai to give the Cruisers their four points. Each team in the jamboree play ed three eight minute quarters facing the other three team par- j ticipatmg in the acuon. 4 Full Games Slated 2 Elkton, Yoncalla and Camas Val 9 1 ley are set to begin full-game ac 4 (ion tonight. The Elks will travel 4 1 to Sulherlin to ace the Bulldogs 4 with the varisty game scheduled a ! for 8 and the J.V action slated for 6:30. Yoncalla faces the Oakland Oak ers on the Oakers home floor to night in a prelcague game. JV game time is 6:30 with the varsity playing at 8. Camas Valley will play host to the Springfield Millers tonight awilh the JV action set for 6:30 and the varsity squads clashing at 8. By NIEL CELLERS Newt-Review Sports Writer Jim Jarvis racked up 30 points to keep the Roseburg Indians in the thick of the battle, but for wards Ray Palm and Mike Brun dage came through with the final points as the Indians edged the Klamath rails Pelicans night 64-62 in overtime. Brundage Connects Brundage's jump shot from 25 feet away from the basket climax ed the evening's action as the ball swished through the net with three seconds remaining in the three minute overtime period. As the shot from the right corner of the court went through the hoop the fans broke loose and the Pelicans did not have time to get the ball down the court to try and knot the score again. The Indians took the lead in the opening seconds as Jarvis dropped the ball through the basket twice to open the scoring. Roseburg went on to build up a 19-12 lead at the end of the first quarter and held a 33-27 bulge at halftime. Pelicans Make Comeback Klamath Falls staged a brilliant comeback in the second half tieing the count as the buzzer sounded at the end of the third period. How ever, a foul called just before the end of the quarler sent center Tom lloblis lo the free throw line for Roseburg and the Indians came out with a 54-44 lead. Behind the strong rebounding of the backcourt men and the left handed shooting of 6-7 center Brute Brickner the .Pelicans tied the score seconds before the final buz zer sounded. In the overtime period Palm put two charily tosses through the hoop to give the Indians a 62-60 lead! Klamath Falls had a chance to tie the score .as forward Wallv Palmberg went to the free throw line with the one-and-one rule in affect. Palmberg's shot bounced off the front of the rim and guard Marv French grabbed the rebound for the Indians. Knot Score Again With the three minute overtime period Klamath Falls knotted the score again as Brickner sent the ball through the hoop on a fall-away jump shot. Brundage then became the hero as he went in the air from tbe right hand corner of the court and swish ed a 25 foot jump shot to end the contest. Brickner scored 21 points for the game to take second place in the scoring honors behind Jarvis. Brunuaee helped the Indian cause with 15 points and was the third high man for the night. Ron Lake. Roseburg's 6 4 center, was rough under the boards during the contest and held Brickner to only six points in the first half as Lake's defensive work was out standing. Friday night's contest was the first game of the season for both the Pelicans and the Indians. Klamath Falls paced the pre-sea-son prep polls as the team to beat this year. Roseburg was ranked fourth in the pre season polls, but the opener proved the Indians have their sights set high this year. Indians Score Well Roseburg took the opening tip off and Jarvis scored the two pointer on a tip-in. The first quar ter proved to be a scoring duel be tween Roseburg's all-state guard and Palmberg of the "White- birds." Both players totaled seven points in tne tirst period, nut Jar vis bad more help from his team mates as Palm added four. Brun dage five and Lake three as the Indians took a 19-12 lead. Jarvis continued to exhibit the accuracy and ball-control that has won him an all-state position for the last two years as he picked up eight of Roseburg's 14 points in the second quarter. At halftime the Indians led by six points as Klam ath Falls managed to pick up one point on Roseburg in the second period. Pelicans start Rampage The Pelicans started on the rampage m the third stanza as Brickner started to hit late in the seconds remaining in period. French led the Indians in the third period with five points, while Hobbs' last second foul shot pro tected the Roseburg lead. Jarvis and Brundage kept the Indians in the ball game as far as the scoring column went during the fourth quarter. -Jarvis picked up 11 points on four field goals and three foul shots with Brundage swishing jump shots for the other four points. Brickner continued to run red hot dropping through left handed hook shots as the teams battled back and forth, ending the regula tion time limit in a 60-60 tie. Rough Play Noted , Both the third and fourth per iods found the two teams fight ing hard with the play rough under the backboards. The Pelicans and the Indians began to press and many times the ball carriers found themselves without the ball. French sparked the team with bril liant steals as he darted among the Pelicans. Going into the three minute over time period Klamath Falls con trolled the tip-off and fought hard for a cinch shot which the Indians refused to give them. A foul sent Palm to the free throw line and with the one-and-one rule in effect the Roseburg forward added two points to the scoreboard. Brickner tied the score seconds later with a fall-away jump shot only to see Brundage end the ball game with a jump shot from the corner. As the final buzzer sounded Roseburg fans rushed onto the floor to congratulate their heroes. In the confusion that followed Jim Jarvis was carried from the gym on the shoulders of the joy ous fans. Coach Is Pleased The comment running through out the stands was that "it was too close." However in the dressing room coach Curt Jarvis stated that "all the games can be like this as long as the score ends the same way." Statistics on tne game show that Klamath Falls out-shot and out-rebounded the Indians. The big dif ference in the contest was at the foul line where Roseburg sank 14- 16 shots compared to 10 out of 17 tries for the Pelicans, i The same two teams will be back in action at 8 tonight on the Indian home floor. Roseburg will be out to make it two in a row while the Pelicans will be looking for their first win. The prelim game will feature the Glide Wild cats and the Roseburg Jayvecs at 6:15. Guard Jim Jarvis led the Indian scorers with 30 points and was the game's top basket-maker followed by Brickner who collected 21 points. During the second half the Pirate crew started to roll making good use of its height and deadly shooters to roll up 41 points and leave Rogue River in the back ground. Days Creek opened the jamboree with a 10-4 victory over Canyon vUle as Don Perkins led the Wolv es with four points. McLemoro and Fred Grunst divided the scoring for the Tigers. In the second period the CBA cagers downed Days Creek 16-9 as Fdwards Jed the way along with Sanders and Cude each col lecting four points. Jerry Tibhets led the Wolves with four poinls. CBA continued to win downing the Tigers 11-8 in the third game. Dunham scored five points for the Bible academy and McLemore racked up five for the losers. Canyonville came back In the fourth quarter of the Jamboree to get revenge on the Wolve by downing George Boufhe and Loicn Powell with three each. The Wolves from Days Creek handed the CBA team its first loss out scoring the Academy squad 13-11 in the fifth eight minute period of the Jambonee. Mike Don ovan scored six points for Ihe winners and Fred VanNorman added four more. The final period of the Jam boree saw CBA and Canyonville battle to a 9-9 tie Spence led the CBA team and McLemore paced the ' Tuers as each boy tallied four points. Canyonville will turn to regular action tonight facing Ihe hoopsters from Bulla Falls. Game time at Canvonville will be 6 30 for the JV squads and S for the varsity. Sulherlin Bulldogs Win Over Cottage Grove 5 Road Runners Hold Enduro Competition The Roseburg Road Runners mo- 17 torcycle club is holding its third 19! annual Enduro at the Busenbark 2 ranch in Happy Valley Sunday at 2.11 a.m. 4 1 In the contest the riders and 66 1 their cycles must be able to hold I up for four laps on a 15 mile 5 ! course to win. This year the f';t 11! rider across the finish line will De 14 1 declared the winner. The Enduro is open to all riders and spec tators are welcome to attend the event. The race will be held rain or shine with the cycles starting at 11 sharp with a dead-motor-start. Winners of the last two Enduro's are Al Thomas and Tom John son. Thomas will be back in com petition again this year. The local cycle club will act as host to all out of town riders have warming fires and coffee in the pits. President Harold Horton stated that seven trophies would be awarded at this year's Enduro. Three trophies will be presented in the heavies classifications, three will be awarded for lightweights and I trophy will be given to the fast man on the first lap of the course. The course for Sunday's event was marked by Bill Robertson and Tom Bentley who say that it is a "real toush course and should provide thrills for the riders as well as for the spectators. The Roseburg Road Runners have two scramble tracks and a hillclimb on the Busenbark ranch. These courses are used by cycle enthusiasts every Sunday. The r.nduro differs from a scramble I in that the course has all kinds of ' terrain which must be conquered by the rider. Working from a guard slot Mar cus Mann racked up 14 points in leading the Sutherlin Bulldogs to a thrilling 41-38 decision over the Cottage Grove Lions Friday night at Cottage Grove. Take Early Lead The Bulldogs took a 9-8 lead at the end of the first period, but were not able to hold the Lions as Cottage Grove held a 21-19 half time edge. Sutherlin moved back into the lead early in the third pe riod and led 28-24 at the end or the slanza. Battling back and forth the Bulldogs managed to hold onto the lead and edge the Lions 41-38 in the final count. i Center Roger Walling followed Mann in the scoring column with seven points. The remainder of the points for the Bulldogs were spread among five players as seven of the eight boys to see action for Suth erlin scored. Reserves Handle Load Cottage Grove's starting lineup ran into trouble and the reserves were called on to handle the load for the Lions. Three reserves came in and tied for high point honors as Jim Esles. Dick Voglen and Larry Carr accounted for eight points apiece. Coach Dick Yurk was happy over Friday's win as the Bulldogs step ped out of their class to face an A-l team in the opener. Tonight Sutherlin will face a B school as the Elklon Elks invade Bulldog land with Jayvee action starting at 6:30 and the varsity game scheduled for 8. Willamette, paced by Junior Sato and Buzz Wilfert, defeated Southern Oregon College, 80-62 Friday night. Sato, a speedster from Hawaii, scored 18 poinls and Wilfert potted 17. Lewis and Clark beat Portland State, 74-66. Pacific, which downed Oregon Tech, 73-60, for its first victory in 39 games, and Linfield, which beat Oregon College, 70-58, will meet in one consolation game for fifth place. Portland State and Southern Oregon will clash for third place, and Oregon College and Oregon Tech will play for seventh place. Tony Jackson, captain of St. John's University basketball team, scored 1.052 poinls during his first two campaigns with the Redmen.
