Senate Row Draws
Hatfield Comment
SALEM (AP)-Gov. Mark O.
Hatfield said the election of a
presiding officer in the state Sen
ate is not a party matter.
"A presiding officer there is
an objective role," Hatfield said.
The governor made the state
ment at a Thursday news con
ference in answer to a reporter's
question on the conflict over the
Senate presidency between Demo
cratic Sens. Harry Boivin, Klam
ath Falls and Alfred Corbett,
Portland.
Corbett has the support of 13
of the 20 Democrats but Boivin
has bi-partisan support as presi
dent. Hatfield said the partisan role
is that of the elected minority
leader and the majority leader
on the legislative floor.
He said that although officially
there is no majority leader, cer
tain legislators generally are ac
corded that role, on various is
sues. 1:00 Dan Smoot

Canadians Plan
Arms Revisions
UNITED NATIONS. N. Y. (AP)
Canada is planning minor revi
sions in its proposal to set up yet
another disarmament committee
in hopes of winning U.S. support
for the move.
U.S. officials took exception to
Canada's original version. They
said the United States might ab
stain or even vote against the plan
put forth by Its neighbor. .
Canada wants the General As
sembly to recommend that a
small committee of non-nuclear
countries be set up to help
get big-power disarmament talks
started again. U.S. sources have
said they could sea no sense in
setting up one more committee on
disarmament when the Soviets
walked out of hte last one In Gene
va June 27.
A Canadian source said today
that after consultations between
Washington and Ottawa, the Unit
ed States suggested a few changes
in the Canadian plan and Canada
said they would be considered in
drafting a revision.
The sourco did not elaborate.
but he said the differences in
volved "a matter of phraseology"
and not the idea of the non-nuclear
committee itself.

Democrats Get
Phony Checks
SPOKANE (AP)-Phony checks
bearing names of three promin
ent Spokane men turned up among
Democratic National Committee
contributions.
The bouncing checks carried the
forged names of former U.S. Sen.
C. C. Dill, attorney Ben Kizcr,
onetime director of the United
Nation's relief program in China,
and insurance man Thomas Volk,
police disclosed.
Reports that similar checks
were sent to the Republican Na
tional Committee were being in
vestigated. Two of the checks hearing Ki
zcr's name totaled $850. One for
$750 was signed with Vnlk's name,
and he received a "thank you"
acknowledgement. A $250 check
carried Dill's signature.
The forgeries were discovered
because Dill docs not have an
account at the bank where the
checks were drawn, police said.
The other checks were accepted.
Kizcr and Dill said the scheme
may have been somebody's idea
of a joke.
