s Forecast Growth Of Alaska, NW Canada Calls For Road Jobs Costing $240 Million SEATTLE (AP) - Liquid gold, from northern stfnds and green' gold from tourists' pockethooks will boost Alaska and Northwest Canada to new heights of pros perity and growth in the next 20 years, the Battelle Memorial In stitute predicted Friday, The Columbus, Ohio, research organization recommended, how ever, the early construction of five major highway projects at a cost of S240 million as a neces sity in developuig the huge north west area. Climaxing a 15 months study, the Battello Institute presented tu the Alaska International Kail and Highway Commission a report which predicted that in the next 20 years there will be: An increase of nearly $1.4 bil lion dollars in annual income: A population increase of from 364,000 now to 698.100; A potential of 850,000 travelers annually to Alaska and an addi tional 550,000 to Northwest Cana- Schoolyard Fight Results In Death PHILADELPHIA (AP) . An 11 year-old boy has been 'charged with homicide in the death of a 9-year-old schoolmate in a school ' yard fisht. Edward Jones was arrested Thursday after he admitted fight' ing' Tuesday with Howard Ud church. Jones said Unchurch fui backward and struck his head on the concrete pavement during a recess perioa. The two Negro boys returned to their classes. Upchurch later suf fered convulsions in his home and was taken to a hospital, where he died. An autopsy listed death from a brain hemorrhage. Isadore Freed, Concert Pianist, Composer Dies OCEANSIDE, Long Island, NY. (AP) Isadore Freed, 60, compos er, teacher and former concert pianist, died Friday of a heart attack. He was chairman of com position and theory at the Hartt College of Music, Hartford, Conn-,, and formerly served on the facul ties of Temple University and He brew Union College. da. They are expected to spend about $380 million annually. An increase by more than $400 million annually in the value of petroleum produced, with the La nadian section of the area claim ing a large share of the increase. The Battelle study concluded in its report wiin this recommenda tion: 1 "Alaska and annroDriate Cana dian agencies should develop a planned, integrated program to encourage travelers to the region. This would involve a considered assessment of the attractions with in the region, planning for and encouragement of the development of desired facilities to meet the travelers wants and needs, and stimulating travel to and within the region through proper promo tional activities." ' A member of the institute noted that at the present time "really effective promotion has not been done." Sen, Warren G. Magnuson, D Wash., acting chairman of t h e commission, and member Sen. E. L. Bartlelt, D-Alaska, praised the report as "an excellent base from which the interested stale, provincial and national govern ments can work. They pointed out, however, that it does not represent the conclu sion of the Alaska International Rail and Highway Commission which will be reached at a later meeting in Washington, D.C. and then be submitted to Congress, It may be expected, they said, that the commission's conclusions will be based principally or alio gether on the studies of the In stitute. B. D. Thomas, Renton.' Wash president of the Institute, also painted a glowing picture for the vast area from the Willamette Valley of Oregon through Wash ington, western Canada and Alas ka. "This area has the most prom ising future that the human race can snow anywhere," lie said l a luncheon address. "The time is going to come.' he said, "when the area from the Willamette north to Vancouver will be one vast metropolitan area witn 50 million people. . "The northland will be the ul timate frontier. The population mere will increase extremely rapidly. Young Mother Takes Lives Of Children CLEVELAND, Ohio (AP) A voung mother put her two chil dren to death, in the garage at their home in suburban Lyndhurst late Thursday but failed in an at tempt to kill herself, police re ported. The children were found dead and their mother seriously ill in an automobile parked in the ga rage. The motor of the car was running and the garage was filled with tumes. Dead were Joel Morrison, 4, and his sister, Diane, 3. The mother, Mrs. Jerome Mor rison, 27, was held under police guard at Hanna Pavilion of Uni versity Hospitals. No charge was filed against her. . - Morrison, an accountant, found his wife and children huddled in the car when he returned from work about 6 p. m.
